Starting salary of $44, 387.20/annually; $21.34/hourly

Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
Position contributes to the physical upkeep of Larned State Correctional Facility through diagnosis, repair, and upkeep of systems delivering water, air, steam, and electrical systems. Participates in the building trades for the upkeep and repair of the agency.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Accomplishes installation, renovation, maintenance, repair, and construction of the physical plant at Larned State Correctional Facility. This includes concrete and wood structures and systems that deliver electricity, water, heat, and tempered air. Performs and oversees concrete and masonry work, including construction of carpentry forms and estimating concrete yardage. All tasks may be performed with the assistance of residents. Prepares materials and time cost estimates for routine tasks and special projects. Prepares either verbally or in writing, progress reports of routine tasks through work orders, preventative maintenance schedule, and pre-determined time line on special projects. Will complete welding repairs and metal fabrication projects at the facility.
- Communicates with Physical Plant Supervisor Spec on a regular basis to discuss progress and performance and explore alternative solutions to problem. Holds conferences with fellow workers to discuss specific projects and current progress. Discusses physical plant conditions and problems with the appropriate personnel, offering assistance and technical expertise with regard to direction of the specific problem and obtaining necessary cost information and other data needed to make a decision.
- Provides adequate training to ensure that residents are able to perform the required tasks. Follows up to insure quality workmanship and identify deficiencies as well as strengths, in order to develop the skills of the trade.
- Assures compliance with Life Safety and Occupational Safety, and sanitation procedures by regularly inspecting area of responsibility and enforcing such rules in order to minimize risks of illness, injury, or death of residents and staff and assure a safe work environment. Develops necessary procedures or modifications to maximize productive utilization of resources in the construction, maintenance, and ongoing operations of the physical plant.
- Ensures maintenance and control of tools and equipment in area of responsibility as directed by policy. Keeps accurate inventory to prevent theft and to advise appropriate personnel of replacement needs. Trains resident workers and follows up to assure proper usage and care of tools to prevent unnecessary breakage and down time.
- Other duties as assigned. May be assigned to contact local inspectors, suppliers, and contractors to facilitate the acquisition of materials and inspections.
Qualifications:
Licensing & Certification :
Valid drivers license
Minimum Qualifications :
Five years of experience in the mechanical or building trades. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
Preferred Qualifications :
Degree or certification from an accredited school or license in a maintenance field. Experience at a journeyman’s level or other licensing in the construction field. Knowledge of the standard practices in other building trades such as plumbing, carpentry, masonry, painting, welding, sheet metal, refrigeration and air conditioning, and mechanical trades.
