Position Summary & Responsibilities

Responsible for planning, developing, and conducting highly specialized orientation, basic corrections officer, Special Operations and Response Team (SORT), and in-service training programs to improve the knowledge, skills, and ability required of supervisory, security, clerical, technical, and other personnel employed at the Ellsworth Correctional Facility (ECF). Work is reviewed by Central Office Personnel and ECF Staff Development Manager continuously by observation, consultation, and review of written work for appropriateness and accuracy.

Job Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following: Responsible for determining Staff Development needs; developing, evaluating, and preparing Staff Development materials; scheduling, coordinating, and obtaining competent instructors for specific areas. Conducting Staff Development courses related to principles, methods, and techniques of modern penology and other support function on a daily basis. Work is reviewed periodically by supervisor through observation, discussion with staff, and written materials.

Responsible for monitoring all phases of the Staff Development program including the preparation, delivery, and evaluation by writing, reviewing, and revising lessons plans as needed. Responsible for providing all necessary training aids, audio visual equipment, and reference material, etc. by frequent contact with instructors. Supervisor reviews work by reading evaluation forms, Staff Development records, and feedback from staff to determine whether technical support was appropriate and adequate.

Responsible for documenting, preparing, and submitting all reports of activity for monitoring purposes that are involved with the Staff Development program by use of mandatory agency mechanisms. Supervisor and Central Office personnel will review for accuracy and compliance of agency policy and procedures. Supervises and conducts employee reviews for all newly hired staff while in training and monitors their performance throughout the training process. Responsible for managing, reviewing, and approving timesheet submissions for these employees.

Qualifications

Education: High school or GED completion

Licensing & Certification: Have a valid driver's license and certification as a Corrections Officer by the Secretary of Corrections.

Minimum Qualifications: Must meet all minimum qualifications and necessary special requirements for COI (A); be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment; have three years of relevant experience in the field of corrections or in the detention of convicted offenders including one year of supervisory experience. At the discretion of the agency, college coursework in criminal justice, the behavioral sciences, or the social sciences, or completion of corrections officer training in another jurisdiction may be substituted for some or all of the required COTP and for some or all of the required non-supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Including the years listed in minimum qualifications, two years of experience in developing and delivering training materials and presentations.

Selection Process:
Applicants selected for an interview will be evaluated by an interview panel using performance/behavior-based interview questions. The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval. A second interview may be conducted. Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency; and possess a valid Driver’s License.
