The Kansas Department of Labor is recruiting for a detail-oriented and analytical professional to join our Unemployment Tax team as an Auditor. This position may office in Lenexa or Topeka offices. Must have a high level of independent judgment, investigative ability, and professional communication.
This position is responsible for conducting in-depth investigations and audits of businesses to determine employer status, employee classification, and compliance with Kansas Employment Security Law. The auditor plays a key role in identifying potential SUTA (State Unemployment Tax Act) dumping activities and ensuring that employer account statuses are accurate and legally compliant.
The work involves reviewing financial records, operational processes, banking information, and other relevant business documentation. Auditors apply laws, regulations, and investigative techniques to determine compliance, write clear and factual audit reports, and recommend corrective actions when needed. The ability to understand and apply complex policy and legal frameworks is essential.
Auditors may also be called upon to support legal proceedings by preparing documentation or offering testimony. Strong written and verbal communication skills are critical, as is the ability to maintain professionalism when working with legal representatives, supervisors, and business owners.
This role also includes providing support to employers by helping them complete required reports, resolving discrepancies in wage data, and assisting with reporting requirements and payment options. While this position does not provide legal advice, it serves as a key point of contact for employers navigating their responsibilities under state law.
This is a highly responsible and impactful position that supports the integrity of the state’s employment tax system. Candidates with experience in accounting, audit, business operations, or financial investigation are strongly encouraged to apply. Demonstrated knowledge of financial documentation, critical thinking, and the ability to manage multiple priorities within deadlines will contribute to success in this role.
