Position Summary & Responsibilities:

  • This position requires T3 security clearance as a Media Production Technician. This position works in the Public Affairs Office of the Kansas Adjutant General's Department and has access to areas at National Guard or military facilities that were assigned and is required to enter areas where security clearance may be required as part of their job depending on projects assigned. This position is also responsible for photography, videography and social media development/maintenance for the Kansas Adjutant General and his department.

  • Prepares internal and external public affairs products for distribution through social media, DVIDs, agency websites and release to civilian media, as applicable. Researches and writes stories/articles and rewrites material intended for distribution. Lays out and edits the agency annual report. Shoots related to photos and video, as required. Edits and revises products for style, format and content; and review and edits photography and artwork for quality and composition. Produces original media material such as graphics to be used on social media. Assists in creating content and posting to agency web/social media.

  • Performs work for the production/management/maintenance of electronic and web-based information products. Write draft and final versions of feature articles for internal and external audiences. Confers with program specialists, action officers, and other subject matter experts to obtain the latest and most accurate information and imagery approved for public release.

  • Provides coverage of and products of events with local organizations, state and national legislative offices and internal events which are designed to promote positive relations between the Guard and surrounding communities

  • Participate in Kansas Division of Emergency Management exercises such as Wolf Creek and Foreign Animal Disease exercises.

  • During disasters such as flooding, tornadoes, ice storms, etc., may be required to work outside regular hours on short notice to support emergency response activities. This includes writing news releases, monitoring social media, providing coverage of disaster response and other duties as assigned. Responsible for serving in the Joint Information Center (JIC) and working with other agency personnel to gather information. Work is reviewed by the Director of Public Affairs.

  • Other duties as assigned. Performs other responsibilities related to job class which meet the organizational needs of the office and support the mission of the Public Affairs Office of the Adjutant General's Department.


Qualifications

  • Education:
  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent. See additional minimum education or training requirements below.

Education or Training-special or professional:

  • Must have a minimum of 12 months of specialized experience, education or training involving knowledge of writing, communication principles, methods and techniques that relate to the public affairs of an agency. Experience in applying and adapting knowledge of strictly controlled situations of an agency. Experience writing articles on routine events of noncontroversial subjects. Experience in responding timely and appropriately to requests for information concerning agency programs and services. Experience participating in meetings with specialized groups to listen to and understand feedback on agency programs that are of particular interest to the public.

Licensing & Certification:

  • Valid Driver's license. This position requires ANACI Security Clearance.
  • One year of experience in media communications/production work. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.

Special knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of computers and software is required (i.e., Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud). Must understand video production and be able to capture video, edit with Adobe Creative Cloud and distribute video stories/products to various outlets. Must have or be able to quickly develop a thorough knowledge of the organization and its operations. Must be self-motivated, capable of making appropriate decisions independently, responsible and have good people skills. Solid working knowledge of manipulating graphics/photos is required. Demonstrated ability to spell. Solid knowledge of English grammar and language. Common sense.


Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements
:

  • Favorable KBI check. Receive secret security clearance from the federal government. May be required on occasion to lift material up to 50 lbs. May be required to return to work or work additional hours on occasion, i.e., for natural or man-made disasters to assist in handling media traffic or deployment or redeployment of soldiers/airmen and other emergency events. Must be able to multi-task, be able to handle stress and have a high skill level.
