Job Description

The lowa Department of Administrative Services is seeking a skilled, journeyman-level mechanic to join our Facilities Management team. This role is ideal for an experienced trades professional who takes pride in high-quality work, values consistency and stability, and wants to apply their skills in a mission-driven public service environment.

You'll play a critical, hands-on role in maintaining and repairing state facilities that serve lowans every day working independently, solving complex mechanical issues, and coordinating work across multiple building systems.

What You'll Do

  • As a journeyman-level maintenance professional, you will:
  • Perform skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work across multiple trades, including mechanical, plumbing, pneumatic, and low-voltage electronic systems (24V and below).
  • Independently diagnose and troubleshoot complex building system issues, recommending effective, long-term solutions.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and system inspections for plumbing, and mechanical equipment to ensure reliability and safety.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, sketches, and specifications to complete installations and repairs accurately.
  • Safely operate and maintain a full range of hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
  • Coordinate directly with vendors, contractors, and service providers, including scheduling, oversight, and communication.
  • Manage and document work orders, repairs, parts usage, and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure all work complies with fire codes, safety standards, and applicable building regulations.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable, professional point of contact for building occupants regarding maintenance needs and timelines.

Schedule

Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Subject to call-in, on-call rotation, overtime, and occasional travel)

What We're Looking For

This role is best suited for someone who brings:

  • Journeyman-level knowledge and hands-on experience in building and mechanical trades.
  • Working experience with plumbing, ventilation, boilers, and refrigeration systems.
  • Familiarity with computerized building control systems and maintenance management software.
  • The ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities across facilities.
  • Strong communication skills and a professional, service-oriented approach.
  • Basic proficiency with email, Microsoft Office, and facility management applications.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid lowa Driver's License (or ability to obtain and maintain).
  • Ability to safely operate forklifts, scissor lifts, manlifts, and similar equipment.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotations, weekends, and after-hours work as needed.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Experience equal to three years of full-time work in the operation, maintenance and repair of steam generating boilers, centralized air-conditioning or electrical power generating equipment and auxiliary systems;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting 30 semester hours of accredited coursework from a military school or recognized trade or vocational school in power plant engineering principles including the operation, maintenance and repair of steam boilers for each year of the required experience to a maximum substitution of one year;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state Executive Branch that includes experience equal to one year of full-time experience as a Power Plant Engineer 2.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority, certain employees in this class may be required to obtain a Fire Sprinkler Installer and Maintenance License in accordance with Chapter 100D, Iowa Code.

Designated positions in this job class require applicants to obtain the required certification, license and endorsements within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority at the time of hire.
