Position Overview
Under general supervision, operates a variety of equipment utilized in determining the gross, axle, bridge, and registered weights of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) operating on Illinois highways; checks Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) special permits for compliance; appears in court as a witness, when summoned, to testify on behalf of the State of Illinois; maintains all equipment and physical facilities of the Weigh Station and surrounding area; assists staff of other local, county, state, and federal agencies in the performance of their functions.
Job Responsibilities
Operates a variety of equipment utilized in determining the gross, axle, bridge, and registered weights of commercial motor vehicles operating on Illinois highways
- Reviews the mechanical weighing of commercial motor vehicles completing all required records and reports, including but not limited to, overweight arrest citations, overweight written warnings, bond receipts, etc.
- Submits data to District headquarters for computer check to determine if vehicle stopped has current registration and is not stolen
- Operates a two-way radio on state police frequencies to call patrol officers, supervisors, and/or District headquarters using ISP radio procedures
- Accesses the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS) via the Illinois Wireless Information Network (IWIN) to submit driver information to determine if driver is in possession of a valid driver’s license and is not wanted on a warrant
- Appears in court as a witness, when summoned, to testify on behalf of the state of Illinois
Checks Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) special permits for compliance, with regard to route of travel, height, and width restrictions, etc.
- When violations are found, calls District headquarters and requests a sworn officer’s presence to handle the permit violation
- Explains overweight violations to the CMV driver in addition to explaining the procedures which must be followed prior to proceeding
Determines bond cost amounts for overweight violations from schedule of penalties, accepts bond money, and completes official receipts
- Safeguards all monies prior to collection by an authorized source
- Maintains paper and/or electronic logs of violations, bond money collected, and other pertinent data
Maintains all equipment and physical facilities of the Weigh Station and surrounding area, including but not limited to, policing grounds, washing windows, washing and waxing floors, cleaning and/or replacing filters, replacing light bulbs within or attached to the building, removing snow, changing water bottles, etc.
- Climbs ladders, lifts buckets, and pushes mops and shovels to complete these assignments
- Performs hand mowing and trimming in the building area utilizing a small landscape mower and other equipment provided by the IDOT to complete these assignments at each weigh station
- Notifies supervisor of repairs needed to Weigh Station equipment, physical facilities/grounds, or computer software/hardware
- Notifies supervisor of supplies needed, i.e., general office supplies, cleaning supplies, etc.
Assists staff of other local, county, state, and federal agencies in the performance of their functions, i.e., weighing trucks, opening Weigh Stations, submitting data for computer checks
- Provides information to travelers and others requesting same
Completes a variety of records and reports of special activities, which can be reasonably accomplished while performing daily job duties
Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
Minimum Requirements
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school, or comparable education, training, and/or experience
- Requires experience necessary to obtain an F.C.C. restricted radio-telephone operator's license
Preferred Qualifications(In Order of Significance)
- Prefers 2 years professional experience operating various types of equipment used in measuring and weighing highway vehicles
- Prefers 2 years professional experience utilizing state laws governing vehicles operating on state highways
- Prefers 2 years professional experience reading and following written and oral instructions
- Prefers 3 years professional experience communicating well with fellow employees and others
- Prefers 3 years professional experience utilizing the four (4) mathematical functions of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Prefers 3 years professional experience performing a variety of manual tasks consistent with the duties of the class
- Prefers 2 years professional experience communicating effectively
Conditions of Employment
- Requires successfully passing an Illinois State Police background check
- Requires successfully passing an Illinois State Police drug screening
- Requires the ability to lift up to 45 pounds
- Requires ability to work alone and to work shift work including holidays
- Requires the ability to obtain and maintain LEADS certification at the less than full access level
