Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Maintenance Worker. Under immediate supervision of the Standard Sign Chief and the day-to-day guidance of the Highway Maintenance Lead Worker, the successful candidate will perform a variety of semiskilled tasks involving maintenance of the Highway Sign Shop facility, preparation and reclamation of sign base materials, packaging of materials for delivery, and storage of inventory items.
- Performs janitorial and grounds maintenance for the Sign Shop facility.
- Performs preventative and functional maintenance on the Sign Shop facility and equipment.
- Assists with removal of completed signs from drying racks, packaging of materials for shipment, placement of signs and materials into appropriate storage locations, and retrieval of stored items for sign manufacture and delivery preparation.
- Sorts, classifies, resizes, straightens, strips, and stores salvageable sign materials.
- Operates fairly complex and expensive machinery to remove sheeting from and apply sheeting to sign base materials.
- Operates forklift and other material-handling equipment.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
- Requires six months experience performing a variety of semiskilled manual tasks in the maintenance of highways, buildings, grounds, waterways or in a related field.
- Prefers ability to operate power tools and equipment.
- Prefers a working knowledge of sign standards and designs.
- Prefers ability to work from drawings and shop work orders.
- Successful completion of a background investigation.
- Ability to perform arduous labor.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Requires pre-employment physical examination, drug and alcohol screening and random drug and alcohol testing.
