Position Overview
The Correctional Locksmith position performs a vital role for the facility, maintaining the integrity of our lock system and providing a system to track and tag lock numbers in an efficient and accurate manner. The successful candidate will have prior experience as a locksmith and be able to perform data entry proficiently into a computer system. Job Responsibilities
- Functions as skilled locksmith at the facility.
- Operates locksmith’s shop and related equipment.
- Inspects all tools to ensure equipment are in operating condition.
- Assures safety and security of facility in performance of assigned duties and/or knowledge of information affecting operation and/or security of facility, reporting such information as required.
- Maintain accurate inventory of all tools under his/her supervision as outlined in established procedures.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
- Requires a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a skilled locksmith.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience as a skilled locksmith utilizing tools, materials, methods, locking systems and devices, and standard practices of the trade.
- Prefers successful completion of a 20-hour basic training course as a Locksmith.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience brazing and operating an oxy-acetylene torch.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience welding/fabrication and operating a MIG gas metal arc welding (GMAW) welder.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience reading, interpreting, and working from plans, simple drawings and/or sketches.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience making arithmetical computations and bulk estimates of materials needed.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience preparing reports of unusual happenings, accidents, violations of rules, and operational reports.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience enforcing discipline, safety, security, and custodial measures.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience maintaining inventory and accountability of tools.
- Prefers completion of 40 hours of training in the IDOC Key and Lock Control program.
- Prefers data entry skills equivalent to keyboarding at 30 wpm.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience and knowledge of institutional rules, regulations, and requirements for the control of individuals in custody.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six (6) months of employment.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug Testing policy. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
