This Role:

This is the position of Interpretive Publications Designer in the Public Access Services Office within FWC’s Division of Habitat and Species Conservation. The Division of Habitat & Species Conservation is comprised of six Sections and two Offices. The Public Access Services Office is a leader in innovative best practices to provide safe, sustainable, quality wildlife experiences and conservation opportunities to the public. This is an exciting opportunity to join our team!

 

The Interpretive Publications Designer designs and edits interpretive materials for Florida’s Wildlife Management Areas and manages the print production process for signs and publications. This is a full-time OPS position with a pay rate of $19.24 per hour, with potential for health benefits. Includes some travel and occasional evening and weekend duties.

 

The Work:

 

Graphic Design – 50%

Selects, prepares, creates, reviews and completes free-hand or computer assisted artwork, graphics and typography using Adobe Creative Suite. Reviews and edits map designs provided by cartographer in Adobe Illustrator, conforming to cartographic standards. Designs publications, interpretive panels, and other public information products. Maintains updated design standards for appropriate, graphically pleasing and accessible public communications.

 

Production Management – 30%

Tracks the publication production process, ensures timely product completion from concept to graphic design to printing to delivery. Updates and maintains a database of interpretive products including type, dimensions, cost, production date and vendor. Organizes and maintains electronic records such as print or fabrication production specifications, contracts and photo releases.

 

Photo Management – 15%

Assists selecting appropriate photos for use in interpretive products. Helps manage photo database using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Secures and stores photo and model releases. Identifies gaps in photography resources and conducts photo shoots or secures photography as needed.

 

Other Duties – 5%

Attends staff meetings and participates in professional development courses as appropriate. Responds to telephone and mail inquires. Occasional participation in agency outreach events and conferences. Travel with overnight stays may be required.

 

Cooperation, communication, and teamwork are necessary skills for this position. Candidates must be highly proficient in written and verbal communication. The successful applicant will demonstrate self-direction and self-motivation, sound decision making, and the ability to create and maintain positive and respectful working relationships with colleagues, contractors, and partners.

Minimum Qualifications: A high school diploma and four years of professional experience in communications, art, or a related field. A bachelor’s degree can substitute for four years’ experience. This position is expected to work independently with limited supervision. This position works 40 hours per week, with a total of 1,920 hours worked per fiscal year. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License and have the ability to travel and work some evenings and weekends.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  1. Ability to analyze needs and product requirements to create a design.
  2. Knowledge of publication production and print process.
  3. Ability to evaluate photography for use on web, print and sign products.
  4. Highly organized, able to manage multiple projects, has strong attention to detail.
  5. Self-directed and able to work as an effective team member.
  6. Ability to travel for short overnight trips of 1-2 nights.
  7. Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  8. Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator and InDesign.
  9. Knowledge of ArcGIS mapping software such as ArcPro preferred.
  10. Photography skills preferred.
