The Work You Will Do:

Highway Maintenance Technician II District Six North Dade Maintenance

 

This position will operate a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck; perform pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating; clean and wash equipment.

Annual Salary Range:

$36,621.12 - $47,392.04

 

A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive in the amount of $1,934.40 will be added to the annual salary.

 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

 

Upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional Permit or license; operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating. Cleans and washes equipment.

 

Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.

 

Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) Performs other duties as assigned.

 

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques.

 

Skills in:

  • Operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Operate and perform pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.

 

Ability to:

  • Read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms.
  • Maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Stand for an extended period of time.
  • Operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.

 

 

Other Job-Related Requirements:

  • Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
  • While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver’s license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis perform other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • DURING A DECLARED EMERGENCY EVENT, THE INCUMBENT WILL BE REQUIRED TO ASSIST THE DISTRICT AS NEEDED

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Possess a valid Class “E” driver’s license and obtain a Class “B” CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class “B” CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position. 

This position requires a valid Class (E) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

  1. three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;
  2. any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;
  3. a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and
  4. a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.

 

Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.

In order to be eligible for hire into a position requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL), applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query. Click here to register for the Clearinghouse.  A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.

To be considered for employment, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.

Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query. Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.  The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding. An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements. The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee. If the employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.
