Summary Statement

A class incumbent is responsible for ensuring that all persons sentenced to a State correctional facility are classified and determinations are implemented.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.� Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.Ensures inmates are interviewed, tested and examined by individual members of the multidisciplinary classification team, such as counselors, teachers, correctional officers and medical personnel for the purpose of initial classification or reclassification.�Receives records and reports from individual classification team members with the results of their meeting with the inmate and their assessment of the inmate's needs.�Reviews these records and reports for accuracy of conclusion, completeness of information and adherence to standards.�Schedules and chairs meetings of the multidisciplinary classification team, and leads the group's discussion to assure that all relevant information is taken into consideration and that the team reaches a justifiable recommendation.�Ensures the implementation of the Institutional Classification Committee's decisions by conducting on-site inspections of the custody assignments and treatment programs of inmates, investigates cases of noncompliance and takes corrective actions.�Participates in transfer of inmates among facilities to implement the decisions of the Institutional Classification Committee or for population control, and recommends the transfer of inmates in crisis situations to ensure the safety of other inmates and correctional personnel.�Recommends changes to inmate classification procedures to effect timely placement of inmates to appropriate custody assignment and treatment programs.�Presents and defends the team's classification and recommendation consensus to the Institutional Classification Committee for final determination.�Conducts special studies and researches and presents findings to the Institutional Classification Committee for utilization as part of the inmate classification procedures.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Inmate Classification Officer I Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: Six months experience in using an inmate classification system to classify inmates based on risk factors and treatment needs. Six months experience�in making recommendations as part of a clients service plan such as clinical treatment, counseling, or determining eligibility for health or human services/benefits. Six months experience�in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures. Six months experience�in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data. Six months experience�in narrative report writing.

Additional Posting Information

Applicants may only apply if they are current permanent employees of the State of Delaware Dept. of Correction in a position covered by the Merit System who have completed their initial probationary period.

Conditions of Hire

Candidates must successfully complete all phases of the Non-Security Basic Training Course to receive Hazardous Duty A1. This course is five-weeks in duration, and is administered by the Department of Correction Steven R. Floyd Sr. Training Academy. Coursework includes physical, classroom and hands-on training. This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization). The candidate selected for this position shall be asked to join and pay dues to the labor organization or may, decline joining the labor organization and not pay dues or a fee. The labor organization has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other work related purposes. Effective, November 21, 2024, the selection process for internal promotions or transfers is managed using Policy 9.27 of the State of Delaware Department of Correction. This policy is to ensure consistency in the selection process for all internal promotions or transfers for job classes up to and including pay grade 16.
