Introduction
Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) is a constituent unit of the Board of Regents for Higher Education (BOR), Connecticut State Colleges and Universities . We are recruiting for two (2) full-time Building and Grounds Patrol Officer positions, located in Danbury, CT.

Positions Requirments
  • Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Work Hours: Must be available for all shifts
  • Eligible candidates in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
  • A medical exam, drug screen, and criminal background check will be required prior to offer of employment.


About The Department
These positions will be responsible for dispatch operations and physical security support for both the Midtown (181 White Street) and Westside (43 Lake Avenue Extension) campuses in Danbury, CT.


About The Role
The positions are critical to the University's law enforcement efforts, acting as the central hub for dispatch, electronic record management, and security oversight. Key responsibilities include:

  • Dispatch Duties: Managing emergency and non-emergency communications to support police personnel, including the use of telephones and police radio systems.
  • Collect Certification: A pivotal requirement for these roles is obtaining and maintaining certification for the Connecticut On-Line Law Enforcement Communications Teleprocessing system.
  • Operational Flexibility: These positions demand high availability to cover various shifts, ensuring 24/7 communications and security coverage. Candidates must be available to work any shift and any day of the week.
  • Security Support: Providing campus security support and electronic records access.
  • Electronic Systems and Records: Maintaining documentation using various data management systems and word processing programs; operate security cameras and monitor alarm systems.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
At a state institution, university or school, or facility this class is accountable for providing basic security services designed to ensure the control and safety of clients, students, employees and the visiting public.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Enforces regulations relating to parking and traffic control as established by assigned agency;
  • Directs traffic on state property;
  • Issues tickets for violations;
  • Gives information and assistance to visitors;
  • Guards entrances and exits to prevent trespass, vandalism, theft and other violations;
  • Performs routine vehicle and foot patrol duty and monitors security and alarm systems to detect theft and other criminal acts;
  • Provides security escorts;
  • Provides first aid when necessary;
  • Performs dispatching and record keeping functions at a desk post;
  • At a state hospital, assists in maintaining order among patients;
  • Assists in searching for missing patients;
  • At an agency or institution, may oversee the activities of fellow officers as designated;
  • May assist in fire prevention and fire fighting activities;
  • Performs related duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate in their application:

  • Experience with emergency situations
  • Dispatch experience
  • Providing good customer service
  • Experience using technology including Microsoft Office and Law Enforcement Software


Special Requirements
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and maintain a Standard First Aid Certificate and/or CPR certification.


Character Requirements
In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.


Physical Requirements
  • Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
  • Applicants may be required to pass a physical examination.


WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to the attendant discomforts of working outdoors, to the effort of prolonged periods of walking and standing while on foot patrol and/or guard duty, and to some danger of injury in performing the duties of the class.
