THE POSITION
The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is actively seeking a part-time Maintainer (Driver Equipment Operator). This position plays a critical role in transporting clients to essential medical, dental, and behavioral health appointments, as well as agency programs that support recovery and social connection. Many clients face significant challenges navigating transportation independently, making this service vital to maintaining their health, treatment engagement, and overall well-being.

THE ROLE
  • Taking necessary preventative action to ensure safety and well-being of all passengers
  • Checking the vehicle prior to commencement of daily run
  • Coordination of RIDE program
  • Facilitating all peer run driving routes for region
  • Developing efficient transportation routes
  • Maintaining complete and accurate records required for data collection
  • Complying with all established safety practices, state and local motor vehicle regulations, statutes and rules for safe driving

DMHAS is the state agency responsible for providing a comprehensive system of behavioral health services for adults experiencing mental health and substance use conditions across Connecticut. DMHAS works to ensure accessible, recovery-oriented, and evidence-based care through community programs, state-operated services, and partnerships with local providers. The agency is committed to improving outcomes for individuals with severe and persistent behavioral health needs by coordinating services, promoting early access to care, and supporting safe transitions across levels of treatment.


River Valley Services (RVS), a community mental health center serving Middlesex County and the towns of Lyme and Old Lyme, is operated by the State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS). RVS’s goal is to provide the highest quality crisis intervention, case management, and residential and clinical services to adult citizens, 18 years of age and older, who suffer from serious mental disorders and who lack the financial means to secure such services in the private sector.


Services are directed at improving clients’ quality of life and fostering dignity, ability, and recovery. We are dedicated to promoting a complete and responsive service system for our clients and others in need. All persons receiving services from River Valley Services have the right to culturally appropriate mental health and addiction services consistent with their communication needs and personal preferences. Translation and interpreter services are available at RVS.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing duties a substantial amount of time (75%) in one or both of the following areas:

  • Transportation of individuals serviced by the agency;
  • Grounds care (outside services) equipment operation.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

ALL AREAS

  • Keeps simple records and prepares reports (this should be related to duties and not a full-time office record keeping position);
  • Performs related duties as required.

TRANSPORTATION OF INDIVIDUALS SERVICED BY THE AGENCY:

  • Operates a passenger motor vehicle for transportation of individuals with disabilities and other patients;
  • Ensures safety of all passengers;
  • Maintains vehicles in good condition including cleaning and lubrication and preventive maintenance as required;
  • Keeps records in connection with vehicles (gas, oil, mileage) and materials delivered;
  • May deliver medications to and from various locations;
  • May pick up and deliver prescriptions, payroll documents, mail, equipment, medical records, various documents, groceries, etc;
  • May pick up and deliver other state vehicles to state facilities;
  • May perform some stores functions involving loading and unloading of materials, inventory and record keeping.
These are only examples of types of tasks that a Maintainer (Driver/Equipment Operator) may be expected to perform. Incumbents in this class will also be expected to perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with and providing transportation to individuals with Behavioral Health and Addiction conditions.
  • Experience communicating effectively with individuals with Behavioral Health and Addiction conditions.
  • Experience communicating effectively with co-workers.
  • Experience with basic record keeping such as logging information.
  • Experience creating and maintaining basic reports such as mileage reports.
  • Experience writing incident reports.
  • Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
  • The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
