The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, State Park Division is currently seeking to fill multiple Seasonal Resource Assistant positions to help with two outdoor adventure projects – No Child Left Inside® and Sky’s The Limit.


Our No Child Left Inside® (NCLI) Program provides the necessary opportunity for children (and families) to unplug from technology and unearth the vast opportunities that Connecticut’s State Parks and Forests have to offer. As a part of this initiative, the NCLI Families in the Parks Program 2023 offers free family events and programs in the months of February, May through August, as well as smaller scale events, programs and pop-up events from September through December. The NCLI Families in the Parks Program is a game where teams visit a different state park or forest weekly and/or monthly and participate in the event which has environmental themed hands-on and interactive activities and programs. At each event families can participate in the following: outdoor activities, walks, talks, games, etc., all centered around a specific environmental theme such as Boating, Camping, Fishing, Hiking, Wildlife, etc.

The Sky’s The Limit (STL) Hiking Challenge promotes hiking and walking in Connecticut’s State Parks and Forests and encourages family, friends, co-workers and neighbors to take the Sky’s the Limit Hiking Challenge. The 2023 STL Challenge was released on March 20, 2023 and will end on December 1, 2023.


POSITIONS AVAILABLE
  • Seasonal Resource Assistants assigned to the No Child Left Inside® ("NCLI") Program will assist by providing office/field support to the No Child Left Inside® Coordinator. The Seasonal Resource Assistant will be involved with all aspects of NCLI in-person activities, events and programs at various CT State Parks and Forests. Additionally, you will help develop/present thematic environmental programs, create presentations, create postings for parks and Families in the Parks Program Events, track on-going attendance at park programs, compile short videos, take photographs, and assist with special projects, as needed.
  • Seasonal Resource Assistants assigned to Sky's The Limit should enjoy being outdoors and walking and hiking; have a willingness to travel to various CT State Parks and Forests to visit and hike trails. Additionally, you will assist DEEP staff with visiting various trails across the state as well as with the administrative side of this program.
POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
Schedule: This position is 35 - 40 hours per week and requires work on weekends and some evenings. Flexible start/end dates. Work runs through the summer recreation season and into the fall/winter.

Anticipated Duration: No more than 1,040 hours.

Salary: Depends on relevant education and/or experience. There are no benefits with this position.

ABOUT DEEP'S BUREAU OF OUTDOOR RECREATION
Connecticut’s system of state parks and forests, state boat launches, and waterways, provide many opportunities for outdoor recreation for residents and visitors alike. These range from camping and fishing to hiking, boating, and picnicking.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs a variety of entry level clerical duties; performs lower level/general maintenance duties; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Background in environmental education or natural resources conservation.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
