POSITION HIGHLIGHTS Full Time, 40 hours per week Location: Hartford, CT Monday - Friday This position is eligible to apply for telework after successful completion of the working test period, and thereafter, in accordance with the Telework Policy. The Policy can be found here. Employees in their initial working test period must work on site in the office. THE ROLE The Accounting Careers Trainee will report to and work closely with the Contribution and Compliance Manager. Under the direction of the Contribution and Compliance Manager, the Accounting Careers Trainee will work with Authority staff, vendor partners, and other state agencies to support the contribution collection system, ensuring the ongoing solvency of the program. The Accounting Careers Trainee program will introduce the candidate to working in a dynamic, collaborative, and mission-focused environment. The Trainee will gain experience in reconciliation and auditing various payroll records, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations. NOTE: As an Accounting Careers Trainee, you will be a part of a 1- or 2-year training program depending on your level of education. The length of the training program is 2 years for individuals with a bachelor's degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting. The length of the training program is 1 year for individuals with a master's degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting. The length of the training program for an individual who earns a master's degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting while assigned to this classification is 1 year from the date the master's degree is conferred or the end of the original 2-year training period, whichever comes first. Career progression pathway within the State of Connecticut, starting with Accounting Careers Trainee, (current opening), advancing to Accounts Examiner, then Associate Accounts Examiner, and ending with Supervising Accounts Examiner. A slogan on the left reads 'Start with us, Stay with us, Grow with us.' *Salary Note: Minimum Requirements Hiring Rate Completion of 1 Year of Training Bachelor's degree with at least 15 semester hours in accounting and/or qualifying experience $67,460/year $70,542/year Bachelor's degree with at least 30 semester hours in accounting $69,521/year $72,661/year Master's degree in a related field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting $71,606/year $74,843/year ABOUT US The CT Paid Leave Authority is a quasi-public state agency which administers Connecticut's Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program, providing Connecticut workers access to income replacement benefits when out of work for life events covered under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act, the Connecticut Family and Medical Leave Act and the Connecticut Family Violence Leave Act. The CT Paid Leave program is funded through payroll deductions (referred to as contributions) that are remitted to the Authority by employers quarterly. The Authority's mission is to help Connecticut's workforce navigate health challenges and life changes with greater financial security by making benefit payments to eligible workers who need to take leave from work to care for themselves or a family member.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional accounting or auditing position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Receives training in introductory accounting or auditing work for development of skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement into a professional agency accounting or auditing position; Performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the course of the training period; Examines financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with statutes, regulations, guidelines or accepted accounting principles; May receive training in such areas as maintaining financial records and accounts, establishing financial statements and schedules, and preparing budget estimates; Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices; business mathematics and statistics; business uses of information technology; effective report writing; Ability to read and understand written materials; utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience or coursework using mathematical and analytical skills to reconcile accounts or identify discrepancies A bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, public administration, or a closely related field Experience or coursework involving audits and risk principles Experience or coursework in writing a financial report Experience or coursework where teamwork and collaboration were necessary Experience with Microsoft Excel including creating and developing spreadsheets, using macros, pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and importing and exporting data Experience working remotely
