Description Of Job

The position will primarily assist Area 2 District Wildlife Manager’s (DWM) with trapping, immobilizing, relocating or processing nuisance bears and mountain lions. The intern will respond to nuisance wildlife calls such as deer, elk and other smaller wildlife species as directed by the Assistant Area Wildlife Manager, Area Wildlife Manager (AWM) or the on-call DWM. The intern will work with volunteers to educate the public on regulations on state wildlife areas. As needed, the intern will assist managers and wildlife property technicians on general office and property up keep as well as habitat improvement projects on the Area SWA’s such as Russian Olive control, invasive weed control, planting seeds on restoration projects, and dumping mitigation. They may also assist area biologists in tracking of collared elk using radio telemetry, monitoring bighorn sheep, wildlife surveys, collecting field data, and fish sampling to provide a broader overall experience.

The intern will be given diverse hands on training in all aspects of the job. They will work beside the Assistant Area Wildlife Manager, District Wildlife Managers, biologists, property technicians, and wildlife health staff learning about wildlife capture, surveying wildlife populations, wildlife behavior, human-wildlife conflicts, and developing communication skills working with the public.

To Be Compliant With The New Fleet Vehicle Policy, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) Will Be Pulled For Review For Workers Who

  • BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
    • Must be a student or recent graduate with a wildlife, natural resources management or related biological sciences degree.
    • Must be able to perform field work and handle large wildlife, often involving physically demanding work.
    • Pursuant to the DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive , any worker who will be expected to drive a State-owned vehicle is responsible for maintaining a safe driving record and a valid driver license prior to driving any State-owned vehicle.
    • Have an assigned State fleet vehicle
    • Are required to operate a vehicle as part of the position
    • Utilize a State fleet vehicle as a pool vehicle
