Job Summary

The Epidemiologist is a key public health professional responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and investigating patterns of disease and health-related conditions within the state of Arkansas. This role involves conducting research, collecting and analyzing data, and providing public health insights to inform policy decisions and health interventions. The successful candidate will use scientific methods to identify health trends, track disease outbreaks, and contribute to programs aimed at improving the health of the population. The Epidemiologist will collaborate with various public health agencies, healthcare providers, and community organizations to design and implement effective health strategies and interventions.

Primary Responsibilities

Collect, compile, and analyze health data from a variety of sources including hospitals, clinics, public health surveys, and government records. Conduct statistical analyses to identify trends, patterns, and causes of diseases or health conditions. Implement and manage disease surveillance systems to monitor public health trends, including infectious disease outbreaks, chronic conditions, and environmental hazards. Regularly report on health trends and identify emerging public health threats. Lead and participate in the investigation of disease outbreaks and public health emergencies. Work with local health departments, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to identify sources, assess the extent of outbreaks, and develop strategies to contain them. Design and conduct epidemiological studies, including observational studies, cohort studies, and clinical trials, to understand the causes, distribution, and risk factors of diseases. Apply advanced research methods and data collection techniques to produce accurate, actionable findings. Prepare reports, presentations, and research papers to communicate findings and public health recommendations to health officials, policymakers, and the public. Present research results to inform decision-making and public health strategies. Provide training and technical assistance to public health personnel, healthcare workers, and community organizations in epidemiological methods, disease surveillance, and data analysis techniques. Educate stakeholders about public health risks and preventive measures. Assist in the development and evaluation of public health programs aimed at preventing disease and promoting health. Monitor the effectiveness of interventions and recommend improvements based on data and epidemiological findings. Provide evidence-based recommendations to inform public health policies, regulations, and practices. Assist in the development of health strategies that address emerging public health challenges and align with state and federal health priorities.

Knowledge And Skills

Proficient in statistical analysis methods and epidemiological research techniques. Ability to analyze large datasets, interpret complex results, and present findings clearly and effectively. Proficiency with statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, SPSS, Epi Info) is essential. Ability to design and conduct rigorous research studies, including observational studies and clinical trials. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to interpret study results and investigate health trends and disease outbreaks. Strong verbal and written communication skills to present research findings, prepare reports, and make recommendations to public health officials, policymakers, and the general public. Ability to communicate complex epidemiological data in a clear and accessible manner. Exceptional attention to detail to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data, research findings, and epidemiological reports. Ability to identify discrepancies in data and take corrective actions when necessary. Strong problem-solving skills to address complex public health issues, including disease outbreaks, health disparities, and environmental health concerns. Ability to make evidence-based recommendations that drive public health action.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or a related field from an accredited institution.

Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
