The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic-Rural ARFF-Advanced Journey to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

What You Will Be Doing

  • Professionally maintain all heavy-duty equipment associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads and rural airports. Also, maintain light duty equipment associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads and other user agency vehicles being operated in the area-requiring repair. This includes computerized diagnostics and the ability to repair electronic and mechanic systems.
  • The incumbent must be able to resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods. In a shop or remote setting, the incumbent performs routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment with diverse components and diagnostic requirements.
  • Must be able to diagnose, maintain, repair and modify the following systems: Transmission and drive trains, suspension, engine and emission, along with fuel injection systems, hydraulic systems, and brake systems including air and electrical for light and heavy-duty equipment.

The working environment you can expect

This position is located at 3500 Eddie Hoffman Highway, Bethel, AK.

Some travel in small planes to maintain equipment in remote locations is expected in this position. Travel consists of day trips and overnight stays.

Special Notice

  • ETT (Emergency Trauma Treatment) training 40-hour course. ARFF training, including a 40-hour course and medical evaluation and fit test for self-contained breathing apparatus. raining in Managing Wildlife Hazards at Airports (training provided after hire). Must be proficient at operating heavy equipment.
  • Ability to Perform Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) duties in support of Part 139
  • Steel toed boots or other approved personal protection equipment to avoid smashed toes from dropped or fall objects.

Commercial Driver's License Required

This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383), to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety-sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.

  • Hire approval is conditional in that the proposed appointee successfully obtains a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of hire and signs an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC FACILITIES DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY

Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test. According to federal regulations, all violations and refusals will be maintained with the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.

TOOL ALLOWANCE

Employees in this position are required to provide their own hand tools. Employees in this position will be paid a monthly tool allowance determined by their position. Your manager should review this with you after you are hired.
