What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laborer - Freight Loading (TOFC) (Alaska Railroad) position at State of Alaska?
Performs manual labor work in Fairbanks, in a variety of locations. Operates a forklift and man-lift to inspect, load and unload materials.
| Duties and Responsibilities: |
| Uses a forklift (lifts up to 12,000 lbs) to assemble bundles for loading; loading and unloading materials from rail cars; and stacking materials properly on ground. |
| Uses a man-lift to inspect materials prior to loading and unloading. |
| Ties down equipment on flat cars for movement. |
| Cleans, sweeps, paints, washes, rakes and shovels in assigned areas, e.g., Freight house, mechanical shops, TOFC, pipe yard, etc. |
| Assists operators in performing maintenance on equipment. |
| Occasionally drives company vehicles. |
Factor 1 - Knowledge
Knowledge of safe work practices and methods and maintenance of equipment and work areas in accordance with practices and procedures prescribed in ARRC Manual of Safety Rules and Regulations. Must be able to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to exert very heavy physical effort in performing tasks such as frequent lifting and moving objects weighing approximately 75 pounds. Must have some familiarity with the handling freight. Must be able to use/operate forklifts have a load capacity of up to 12,000 pounds. Must have a valid driver’s license.
Factor 2 - Responsibilities
Works under the direct supervision of General Mechanical Supervisor, Fairbanks.. Instructions are given in oral and written form. Duties are performed in accordance with ARRC Safety Manual and General Code of Operating Rules Manual. Work is checked in progress and upon completion.
Factor 3 - Physical Effort
Exerts very heavy physical effort lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, carrying, climbing, twisting/turning and positioning extremely heavy objects which frequently weigh up to 75 pounds. May be required to work at a rapid pace for long periods of time. Requires extended periods of standing, sitting, and walking.
Factor 4 - Work Conditions
Works outside in seasonal temperatures and weather extremes and is subject to the following conditions: loud machinery noises; exposure grease or oil; insect bites; fumes; possible burns from hot equipment; possible injuries from handling equipment; and exposure to electrical shock and toxic or caustic chemicals. Must wear protective eyewear, hearing protection, gloves, and hard hatsRequired Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Six months of experience in general maintenance and freight handling.
- Have a valid driver’s license. (Less than 2 violations & no DUIs in last 3 years)
- Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to exert very heavy physical effort in performing tasks such as frequent lifting and moving objects weighing approximately 75 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
-Experience operating a forklift capable of lifting up to 12,000 pounds.
