What you will be doing:
The Program Technician serves as the primary public contact for the Tok ADF&G Field Office, which manages Game Management Units 12 and 20E. This position also provides administrative, clerical, and operational support to the area wildlife biologists and field staff. The technician is expected to develop and maintain proficiency across multiple systems, regulations, and procedures, while consistently demonstrating accuracy, professionalism, and a positive, service-oriented public presence.
The incumbent is responsible for answering complex public inquiries by phone, email, and at the front counter, providing accurate information about local wildlife populations, land access, and hunting, fishing, trapping, waterfowl, and subsistence regulations. The position issues ADF&G permits and harvest tickets, sells licenses and big game tags, and collects, records, and manages hunt and harvest reports. The position will require the incumbent to be current on recent ADF&G advisory announcements, emergency orders, and Board of Game actions and proposals. This position performs data entry, database management and archiving, and assists in monitoring hunts and updating public information resources. The incumbent supports field staff with administrative and clerical tasks, helps coordinate management meetings, and assists with general office operations, including maintenance of office equipment and supplies. The incumbent will be expected to work with field staff to ensure essential public services are available during posted hours.
The Program Technician is responsible for sealing and measuring horns, skulls, and bear and furbearer hides as well as collecting biological samples from specimens. Fieldwork duties may include assisting field staff as needed to support wildlife management activities.

This position is in Tok Alaska, a small rural community of approximately 1200 people on the Alaska Highway in east-central Alaska. The Tok Area ADF&G office has a staff of 4 and manages over 20,000 square miles of Alaska wilderness in Game Management Units 12 and 20E. Tok is situated in the upper stretches of the Tanana River Valley, with beautiful views of the Alaska Range. The work is varied, dynamic, and full of opportunities to learn something new every day. The working environment you can expect:
This is a permanent seasonal position that is authorized to work for up to 12 months within a calendar year, based on operational needs. The preferred candidate will work full-time on a regular Monday–Friday schedule, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (7.5 hours per day) with a one-hour lunch break, for a full 12-month period.
This position will present limited opportunities for personal leave during high visitor traffic months, including portions of summer fishing and fall hunting seasons.
This position may require infrequent travel within the State (normally one or two trips of up to 3 days during a calendar year).
This position may occasionally require field work which can involve exposure to large animals, insects, inclement weather, and low-level flight in small aircraft.

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:
- Public service skills: Ability to provide clear, respectful, and accurate information to a wide range of user groups, including explaining ADF&G hunting, fishing, and trapping regulations. Demonstrates sound judgment when handling information provided by the public or gathered by the department and maintains confidentiality in accordance with department policies and ethical standards.
- Office Technology Skills: Skilled in using computers and office equipment, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, phone systems, and printers. Ability to gather, organize, and summarize data to support biologists with reporting needs. The incumbent must have the ability to organize and maintain files, track permits and reports, manage office supplies and equipment, assist with program scheduling, meeting coordination, administrative and accounting tasks, and accurately present public information resources.
- Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with field based and regional staff to accomplish goals. Experience setting priorities, breaking down complex tasks, and communicating ideas in an organized and understandable way, both verbally and in writing. Ability to learn, sustain, and communicate working knowledge of complex hunting, fishing, and related regulatory requirements.
A valid driver's license is required.
Minimum Qualifications
Two years of office clerical experience or technical experience related to fish, wildlife or habitat resources;
OR
One year of experience providing advanced clerical services based on established procedures, precedents, and policies in administrative, informative, and/or programmatic functions. This experience includes work such as an Office Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
Substitution:
Postsecondary education from an accredited college may substitute for the required experience (3 semester or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience).
