WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
The Fire Training Administrator develops and implements multiple fire service training programs for fire service agencies and organizations statewide.


OUR ORGANIZATION, MISSION, AND CULTURE: 
The Division of Fire and Life Safety’s Mission is to prevent the loss of life and property from fire and explosion.  Fire safety is improved through three means.   Enforcement, Engineering, and Education.   The Bureau of Fire Accreditation, Standards and Training (BFAST) improves the Education part of the Division’s mission.  The mission of BFAST is to provide fire training and public education services to the Alaskan fire service and all sectors of the Alaskan public.  The position oversees the Alaska Fire Standards Council (AFSC).  The mission of AFSC is to establish professional standards for fire service personnel, and curriculum requirements for the certification of training programs.   The Fire Training Administrator is assigned to develop, direct, coordinate and supervise fire suppression training, certification, Alaska Fire Standards Council, and public education programs statewide for local fire departments, and federal and state agencies.

The location of the position is 3000 C Street, Suite 200, Anchorage, AK 99503.  This is a convenient mid-town location.



WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of fire protection, suppression, and prevention; principles of combustion and causes of fires; methods and equipment for fire prevention and control; statutes and regulations relating to fire protection.
  • Ability to organize, administer and supervise the development and implementation of fire service training programs.  Considerable knowledge of principles and methods of teaching and training, materials and curriculum development, and development of instructional materials.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of supervision and administrative procedures related to program and grants management.
  • Ability to effectively manage and supervise staff and develop and control operating and CIP budgets.
  • Ability to research and analyze existing problems and situations in both urban and rural locations, with subsequent resolution and implementation.   To promote cooperation and participation of public and private concerns and to communicate both orally and in writing with a wide range of individuals and agency representatives.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in fire science technology or a closely related field, public administration or education;
AND
Two years of experience performing fire service training.

Substitution: Fire prevention or suppression experience may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.

Special Note:
Certification as a fire service instructor is desirable.

BACKGROUND CHECK

This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check.  Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.

The successful candidate will be required to read, understand, and agree to via signature, an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.

It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
