Position: State Fair Community College has an opening on the Sedalia campus for a full-time Theatre Instructor and Technical Director. This person is responsible for teaching theatre courses, designing and executing scenic and lighting elements for productions, and maintaining theatre facilities and equipment. This person will supervise the theatre space for all internal and external events. This position plays a key role in supporting the artistic and technical excellence of the Theatre Program while ensuring safety and student engagement. Classes will be predominantly on the Sedalia campus but may also include extended campus sites and online at discretion of the Associate Dean. This position has a projected start date of August 1, 2026.

Essential Job Functions
Teaching Responsibilities:
  • Teach up to 12 credit hours during fall & spring semestersin courses such as:
    • Introduction to Theatre
    • Introduction to Theatre Design
    • Stagecraft and Lighting
    • Stage Make-up
    • Public Speaking
  • Instruct students in safe and effective use of power tools, counterweight fly systems, and shop etiquette.
  • Supervise student work-study assignments and provide hands-on technical training.
Technical & Design Responsibilities:
  • Design and build scenic elements for all stage productions or supervise students building elements.
  • Design lighting for all theatre productions, collaborating with students during implementation.
  • Coordinate and support the audio/visual operations for a diverse schedule of concerts and special events, providing technical leadership and ensuring staffing or personal coverage throughout the academic and summer terms.
  • Maintain and ensure safe operation of stage equipment, including:
    • Lighting systems include but are not limited to control consoles, dimmers, and fixtures.
    • Sound systems include but are not limited to mixing consoles, amplifiers, speakers, and microphones.
    • Counterweight fly system
    • Workshop tools and equipment

Program Support & Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the Theatre Program Coordinator to promote, maintain, and grow the Theatre Program.
  • Participate in and lead production meetings.
  • Assist with student recruitment and program outreach initiatives.
  • The instructor is expected to teach courses in a variety of delivery methods including various parts of term and in on-ground, hybrid, Webcon and online formats.
  • The instructor will be responsible for the instruction and evaluation of student performance while maintaining the standards and integrity of both the theatre curricula and the institution. The instructor must be committed to retaining students and helping them achieve their academic goals through a sense of a student centeredness. The instructor will uphold the philosophy that students learn from frequent and timely feedback in a positive environment. The ability to effectively communicate course content to today’s college students through a variety of multi-media and other instructional strategies is highly desired.
  • Furthermore, the instructor must be willing to continually improve instruction through professional development. The instructor must show a willingness to assume instructional-related responsibilities and leadership roles beyond the classroom such as mentoring adjuncts, serving as lead instructor, and serving on committees designed for problem solving and decision making on the division and institutional levels.
  • Full-time faculty must teach at least 15 credit hours per semester, maintain a minimum of five student hours per week and be available during the college's operating hours, Monday through Friday

Required Qualifications
Education/Experience:

  • Candidate must have completed a master’s degree in theatre or a closely related field with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in Theatre or related field.
  • Master’s degree in Theatre or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of collegiate teaching experience is ideal with Community College level preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in scenic and lighting design and technical direction.
  • Strong mechanical skills and proficiency with hand and power tools.
  • Ability to teach and enforce shop safety standards.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry materials weighing 50–100 pounds daily.
  • Ability to work from heights, including extension and stepladders.
  • Desired applicants should demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, a passion for education, an understanding of the community college population, a commitment to the mission and a vision of SFCC, and a concern for rigorous academic standards, retention and outcomes assessment, and the mastery of active learning techniques in the classroom.
  • Preference is given to those with knowledge and use of Canvas and other educational tools

Vacation Accrual- Full-time Employees:

  • Faculty are not eligible for vacation due to built-in contractual time off but have access to 2 personal days/year.
