Company Description

The Michigan State Budget Office (SBO) is responsible for managing the state’s financial resources, including developing the Executive Budget, presenting it to the Legislature, and overseeing its implementation and compliance. SBO ensures fiscal balance through rigorous monitoring and financial analysis. It also encompasses several offices, including the Office of Financial Management (OFM), Statewide Integrated Governmental Management Applications (SIGMA) Operations and Support, Office of Internal Audit Services (OIAS), and the Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI). As a vital component of Michigan’s government, SBO plays a central role in the state’s fiscal planning and policy development.

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site role located in Lansing, MI. As a Budget Analyst, you will be responsible for analyzing budget proposals, preparing budget reports, tracking appropriations, and ensuring compliance with fiscal guidelines. Additional responsibilities include examining financial statements, supporting program management activities, and collaborating with other departments and stakeholders to manage and optimize the state’s budgetary resources.

Qualifications

  • A strong understanding of Budget Analysis and the Budget Process.
  • Proficiency in Analytical Skills and interpreting Financial Statements.
  • Experience in Program Management and working with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey financial data clearly and effectively.
  • Proficiency in financial management systems or software, such as SIGMA, is desirable.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, Economics, or a related field; advanced degrees or certifications are a plus.
  • Attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
