Role Overview:

The Audit Examiner determines effective and efficient controls for assessing financial compliance, operations, and risk. You will identify patterns, relationships, anomolies, and other irregularities that warrant further review to ensure compliance with federal, state, and agency guidelines.

 

Salary:

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $42,900.00 but may be commensurate with education and job experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Conducts extensive audits of taxpayer accounts to determine any delinquent status and initiates appropriate collection actions.
  • Prepares, identifies, examines, and documents key processes of each agency department.
  • Coordinates internal control risk assessment of key controls within processes documented in collaboration with key department personnel.
  • Coordinates segregation of duties exercise with key department personnel on key processes within the agency department.
  • Evaluates refunds and perform an accurate calculation for all tax assessment.
  • Coordinates tax enforcement activities and compliance work.
  • Provides interpretation on tax law regulations.
  • Provides support and guidance to key department personnel in the pursuit of accurate and timely documentation of key processes within the agency department.
  • Identifies opportunities for performance improvement across the organization;
  • Maintains agency documentation by establishing periodic review processes executed by key personnel within each agency department.
  • Assists Internal Audit with follow up and resolution of outstanding observations from audits, ensuring processes are revised to satisfy the issue identified from the audit.
  • Establish tests and conduct periodic testing of identified controls to ensure compliance and functionality of the controls.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours that may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

 

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment: 

  • Experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or collections work. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in business administration, accounting or a related field is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another. 
  • Knowledge of compliance and collections processes; of accounting and tax administration procedures; and of Indiana tax laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. 
  • Skill in performing basic mathematic computations, in identifying and resolving problems, and in the use of a computer and applicable software. 
  • Ability to use analytical skills to study data and documents. 
  • Excellent attention to detail in order to thoroughly examine tax and related supporting documents. 
  • Considerable knowledge of MS Office Suite and the ability to develop audit procedures. 
  • Ability to draw sound conclusions from quantitative and qualitative data. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other agency and division employees, and the public. 
  • Strong problem solving, analytical skills, and the ability to think creatively. 
  • Effective communication skills. 
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
