Project Manager – Heavy Civil Construction

A leading heavy civil general contractor is seeking a Project Manager to join its team in Richmond, VA. This individual will provide overall leadership on infrastructure and transportation projects including highways, roads, bridges, and site development, serving as the primary point of contact for clients and project stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Leadership & Execution
- Lead and manage heavy civil construction projects from preconstruction through completion
- Serve as the primary liaison with clients, subcontractors, and project stakeholders
- Partner with Superintendents and Project Engineers to ensure successful project delivery
- Oversee multiple projects concurrently based on size and scope
Safety
- Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with OSHA and all regulatory requirements
- Lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, and jobsite safety initiatives
- Monitor jobsite conditions and implement corrective action plans as needed
Financial Management
- Track project costs, budgets, and forecasts
- Prepare and manage monthly payment applications and change orders
- Review and approve subcontractor/vendor invoices and ensure accurate reporting
- Oversee cost control, forecasting, and financial performance of projects
Scheduling & Planning
- Develop and manage project schedules (CPM) and ensure alignment with production goals
- Coordinate with subcontractors, vendors, and internal teams to maintain timelines
- Support value engineering and problem-solving efforts throughout the project lifecycle
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure all work meets project specifications and quality standards
- Maintain accurate project documentation and reporting
- Oversee compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 7 years of heavy civil construction experience, including experience managing projects $10M
- Strong background in infrastructure projects (roads, bridges, utilities, sitework, etc.)
- Experience with construction management software (e.g., Procore, Primavera P6, Viewpoint)
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Additional Details:
- Reports to senior project leadership
- Projects located within the Mid-Atlantic region (primarily Richmond, VA)
- Local travel required; occasional regional travel as needed
- Compensation commensurate with experience
