Founded in 2009, StartOut is a global community of over 25K members and is the largest organization supporting LGBTQ entrepreneurs. We serve all growth entrepreneurs of the LGBTQ community regardless of ethnicity, identity, or gender. Our membership is diverse in gender, race, identity, geographic location, and industries. To level the playing field and have a measurable impact, we offer a highly subsidized suite of successful programs to founders, including our investor portal, the StartOut GrowthLab (our 5-month accelerator), a mentorship program with over 1,000 matches to date, expert office hours, virtual and in-person events nationwide, and community building.

About The Role

The Development and Operations Associate will play a critical role in supporting the internal operations of the Development team by facilitating high-impact fundraising campaigns and partnerships to ensure the long-term sustainability of StartOut. This role will focus on developing and implementing creative fundraising strategies, collaborating with cross-functional teams to manage large-scale projects, and supporting the frontline fundraisers as they raise funds to further StartOut’s mission. The position will also manage organization inboxes and provide administrative support to the Board of Directors and leadership. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in project management, be highly organized and detail-oriented, and possess excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Job Responsibilities

Development (75%)

  • Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer and cross-functionally with Marketing and Programs teams to plan, coordinate, and execute various development activities, partnerships, and events, ensuring their success and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Assist in managing relationships with StartOut’s network of 30-40 corporate partners, including defining and tracking goals and facilitating the annual renewal process.
  • Assist in cultivating and nurturing relationships with major donors, including tracking their engagement and contributions to ensure effective stewardship and ongoing support.
  • Assist Board Members in creating and meeting their annual give-get goals.
  • Update boilerplate development pitch decks and materials, working with the Marketing team.
  • Work with Systems Manager to build and maintain Salesforce pipelines, reports, and dashboards for the Development team, enabling them to track and forecast their portfolios' giving.
  • Provide administrative support for the Development team at large.
  • Other tasks, duties, or special projects as assigned.

Operations (25%)

  • Manage customer service for general organization inboxes, responding to inquiries, addressing requests, and ensuring that communications are directed to the appropriate team members or departments as needed.
  • Provide administrative support to the Dir of Operations including electronically coding and file expense receipts and revenue documentation.

Requirements

Experiences and Qualifications

  • Experience in project management, ideally within a nonprofit or social impact setting. You have experience supporting teams in fundraising, sales, business development, and/or strategic partnerships, with a track record of successfully supporting large-scale partnerships. You understand how to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and can work collaboratively with different teams to drive results. You have a demonstrated ability to think creatively and strategically and a deep appreciation for the value that corporations can bring to nonprofits. You recognize the potential for mutually beneficial partnerships and can effectively assist the fundraising team as they pursue opportunities for a company to contribute to an organization's mission.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas clearly - both written and verbal - for audiences, both internal and external. Recognized success in creating relationships with cross-functional teams from varying levels, working closely with colleagues to brainstorm ideas, discuss pros/cons, and develop ways forward.
  • Proven skill in distilling complex information into compelling, easily digestible narratives; presents information in an inspiring and persuasive way.
  • Operations Management. Has successfully balanced competing priorities, able to exercise judgment in managing those demands with an appropriate degree of autonomy. Experienced in managing complex projects with multiple resources and capable of allocating resources to achieve key objectives. Proven organizational, time, and task management skills, including the ability to prioritize work with a focus on delivering quality products on time. Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Service Delivery and Adaptability. Demonstrates a commitment to outstanding internal and external service to our colleagues, the individuals we serve, board members, and our donors/corporate partners. Demonstrated flexibility in the midst of change, being able to successfully juggle multiple deliverables and adapting to new situations with fresh ideas or innovative approaches.
  • Mission and Culture Alignment. Demonstrates awareness and support for StartOut’s mission and vision. Experience working with and/or commitment to the LGBTQ community. Understanding of entrepreneurship ecosystem is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Proficiency with Salesforce (or a similar database system) is preferred.
  • One-to-two years of successful experience in (a) fundraising in a development program or other comparable charitable organization and/or (b) high-level sales, preferably in financial services or related fields. Major gift or corporate fundraising experience is preferred.
  • Successful in securing and conducting face-to-face/virtual meetings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, business development, organization, and computer/pc skills are required, including specifically proficiency in Google and MS Office products.

This is a fully remote position but requires limited travel for team retreats, events, and corporate meetings, approximately 3-6x/year. Applicants must be based in the contiguous US, and StartOut is unable to provide visa sponsorship at this time.
