What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paralegal - FTL position at Starks Industries?
KEY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Legal Research and Document Drafting
- Examine and evaluate complex criminal cases involving habeas corpus motions under 28 U.S.C. §§ 2255 and 2241.
- Perform in-depth legal research related to legislative intent, judicial precedent, case law, and policy analysis using Westlaw, LexisNexis, legal journals, and online resources.
- Draft responsive pleadings, legal memoranda, briefs, interoffice memos, and other court documents for attorney review and signature.
- Track relevant changes in legislation and case law affecting habeas corpus matters, summarizing findings and distributing to AUSAs and staff.
Case Management and Support
- Monitor case deadlines, status updates, and legal actions needed via automated case tracking systems.
- Provide case summaries, legal issue reviews, and assessments of litigation strategies for AUSAs.
- Maintain awareness of procedural timelines and ensure all legal filings and responses meet strict court deadlines.
Trial and Court Preparation
- Assist AUSAs with trial and court hearing preparations by compiling, organizing, and indexing evidentiary materials and legal exhibits.
- Interview law enforcement officials and federal agents for case development and to assess witness/evidence availability.
- Advise attorneys on case merits, identifying strengths and weaknesses to inform strategy decisions.
Administrative and Technical Support
- Utilize legal and office software to automate legal support functions and perform document preparation and data retrieval.
- Operate standard office equipment including computers, scanners, and copiers, with knowledge of copy enlargement and reduction functions.
EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION:
- Paralegal Certificate or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in criminal litigation or federal habeas corpus case support preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
- Strong knowledge of legal research methods and litigation processes.
- Familiarity with local and federal court rules and filing procedures.
- Working knowledge of legal terminology and habeas corpus law (28 U.S.C. §§ 2255 and 2241).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, LexisNexis, Westlaw, and case management databases.
- Skilled in drafting high-quality legal documents under time constraints.
