—VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT—
JOB TITLE: ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN
HOURLY WAGE: $23.96 per hour (90% of wage during probationary period)
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Under specific direction of the Sanitarian / Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS), the Environmental Technician provides assistance to ensure regulation compliance and adherence to Department environmental programs.
QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of high school or equivalent is required. A 2-year vocational course or 2-year college degree in general or environmental science related field is preferred. Familiarity with wastewater operations is preferred. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES NECESSARY TO PERFORM DUTIES (depends on level of qualifications and experience): Knowledge of wastewater treatment facilities operation, and water distribution systems operation; state and federal regulations managed by the Sanitarian / REHS and Health Department. Skills and Abilities to communicate effectively in verbal or written form; deal and interact with the public; educate and communicate regulations to facilities; operate a computer and associated applications and equipment; make good visual observations. Demonstrate time management and organization skills with attention to detail. Assists the Sanitarian / REHS with enforcement of the FOG (fats, oils, and grease) program (e.g. inspections). Collects data and conducts analysis to ensure compliance, distributes reports and compliance notices. Conduct smoke and dye tests to verify illegal sanitary sewer connections and related compliance; provides assistance to field staff and the Engineering Hydraulics Division as needed. Performs all aspects of inspection and recordkeeping for Plumbing, Point of Sale, and Clean Water Program compliance. Ensures proper enforcement of Department regulations regarding recreational pools. Perform all aspects of Pre-Connection Inspections of properties prior to sanitary sewer connection. Assists in the preparation of department budget, fees, charges and rates. Makes presentations to public for the purpose of providing information about water and wastewater improvements. Other related duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Job functions are performed in a field and/or office setting. Duties may require kneeling and/or maneuvering in tight, dark spaces. May require occasional heavy lifting (i.e. grease interceptor, manhold lid, or inspection related equipment) up to 100 pounds.
