Job Summary:

The Educational Instructor Part-Time serves as a substitute instructor for The Source classes at WFDC and MDC in a learning environment that guides and encourages residents to develop and fulfill their restoration potential. Assists the Program Curriculum Coordinator with content reviews, curriculum updates, and adapting content for other audiences. Ensures that participant surveys are completed in a timely manner and produces survey reports.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities as a substitute instructor in accordance with the standard curriculum. Prepare a class recap for the primary Educational Instructor.
  • Observe, evaluate, and encourage resident's performance and development, fostering an environment of learning and true-life change. Assign and monitor completion of classwork and maintain a record of attendance and class participation.
  • Assist Program Curriculum Coordinator with regular content reviews, curriculum updates, and adapting content for other audiences, such as children and youth.
  • Monitor the timely completion of participant surveys and produce survey reports.
  • Participate as needed in staffing meetings and collaborate with all program staff and other departments to provide information and support in the therapeutic discussion of residents’ needs and requirements.
  • Manage resident behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures and applying appropriate disciplinary measures where necessary.
  • Keep up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods, and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities.

Other Job Responsibilities:

  • Participate in Ministry and prayer activities, as appropriate.
  • Work safely and report all unsafe conditions and behaviors immediately to the Director of Training and Compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Skills & Experience: BA/BS in Education, Psychology, Christianity/Theology, or related field required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have at least 2 years of experience in teaching and/or curriculum development, preferably for adults. Knowledge of and experience with substance abuse and homelessness preferred. Strong knowledge in all Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, and Excel) required. Ability to teach to widely different educational levels. Ability to identify and handle stressful and potentially explosive behavior among the residents and potential residents of the shelter. Able to read well in English and follow the course material as it is being taught. Able to modify, update, and rewrite materials as requested. Strong oral and written communication skills required. Strong conflict resolution skills necessary.

Be able to work respectfully, professionally and in a Christ-like manner with everyone, able to maintain required resident/staff boundaries and possess a willingness to serve the Lord in a ministry that deals with homeless men, women, and children.

Equipment Used: Computer, printer, copy machine, multi-line computerized PBX system, smart board, projector. Must be able to operate a 12-passenger van. Valid Texas Driver’s License with acceptable driving record and current liability insurance required.

Work Environment: Normal business hours, office environment, occasional weekend, or evening events. Frequent visits with residents at program sites are required. Work schedule may be subject to change to meet the business needs of the mission. Business casual dress in accordance with the Star of Hope dress code. Exposure to infectious diseases, relative to the homeless population, is normal.

Relations with Others: Constant contact with immediate peers and manager. Constant face to face discussion with individuals, electronic mail, written letters, and memos. Frequent contact with peers in other departments and vendors. Frequent telephone conversation. Occasional contact with managers, residents, and volunteers.

Physical Requirements: Medium work with lifting to 50 pounds. Constant sitting, use of fingers, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Frequent standing, walking, and feeling. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, lifting, handling, and driving. Constant contact vision at 20 inches or less, and constant color vision and depth perception.
