JOB DESCRIPTION: Elementary Assistant Principal
Qualifications: Connecticut Certification as Intermediate School Administrator (092) or equivalent
Reports To: Principal
General Description: An assistant principal is to assist the principal in such a way as to provide leadership, supervision and coordination of the total educational program with the school in the following four major categories of interrelated responsibilities: (a) management; (b) personnel and instruction; (c) professional development; and (d) human relationships.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervision:
- Assists in the establishment and maintenance of policies and procedures
- Increases opportunities for students to achieve full academic, social and emotional potential
- Provides advice, resources, guidance and supportive assistance to teachers and non-certified staff
- Creates, maintains, and promotes program development that will meet the dynamic needs of our student population and school community
- Oversees and schedules monthly fire drills, prepares evacuation procedures, and supervises all transportation services
- Coordinates all standardized testing
- Program Development:
- Assist in providing time, materials and facilities for program development
- Assist the Principal in development of new programs that meet the needs of students and the school community
- Assist in the orientation of new staff members\
- Assist in keeping all staff members aware of changes, new developments, and program changes in the school
- Staff Personnel Administration:
- Participates in all school staff meetings necessary to fulfill job responsibilities
- Assist in the supervision and evaluation of designated non-certified staff
- Participates in the interviewing process on the assignment of certified and non-certified personnel
- Schedules various duties and responsibilities and non-teaching responsibilities of certified and non-certified staff
- Student Personnel Administration:
- Supervises and manages discipline
- Works with appropriate staff to create positive behavioral interventions to improve student behavior and decision making
- Maintains accurate bully-logs and discipline records
- Coordinates information and makes student referrals to appropriate and department and/or agencies when necessary
- Conducts student, teacher, and parent conferences when necessary
- Public Relations:
- Works cooperatively with colleagues, parents, students, and the community to promote educational excellence
- Maintains positive working relationships with other agencies and groups serving our youth
- Plans agendas and conducts meetings with appropriate staff
- Provides opportunities for individual conferences and informal discussions
- Personal Growth and Professional Development:
- Develops and implements individual goals and objectives for personal growth and development
- Keeps abreast of current trends and research in education through utilization of professional literature and on-line services
- Embraces constructive feedback and adapts performance accordingly
- Attends appropriate conferences and workshops that will enhance job performance
- Participates in appropriate professional organizations, special assignments
- Assists Principal in supervising and maintaining effective school security measures
- Assists Business Administrator with the distribution and supervision of equipment

Performing the job duties of this position requires the following physical demands:
- Reaching, some lifting, standing, walking, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and/or crawling.
- Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment
- Must be able to assist in the lifting/carrying of students in excess of 50 pounds
- Occasional exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather
Terms of Employment: Salary and work year to be determined by agreement between the Norwich Board of Education and Norwich School Administrators Association.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of support services.
Salary : $124,782 - $138,645
