Your Opportunity
Stantec’s Alaska environmental services, wetland (aquatic resources) group, is seeking an entry-level Environmental Scientist to support baseline environmental field surveys, reporting, and project permitting for our clients across diverse business sectors. The selected candidate will apply their interest in Alaskan ecology to be trained to complete field work, baseline and functional assessments, technical reports, and permitting on: wetlands, aquatic resources, vegetation, soils, streams, fish, birds, bats, wildlife, and endangered species. Experience with all of these specialties is not required; a candidate may only have experience on one or two but must be willing to learn the required technical skills. The selected candidate will be trained to complete aquatic resource delineations meeting agency requirements and to understand and help complete CWA Section 404 and 401 permits in Alaska and the western United States. The nuances of aquatic resource delineations will be explained and taught in order to become a competent aquatic resource delineator by knowing what a permitter requires in an application.
As an Environmental Scientist, you will work in a highly dynamic team environment with other biologists and ecologists, NEPA specialists, geologists, engineers, architects, environmental planners, and specialized regulatory permit experts.
This position will include opportunities for both field and office work. During the Alaskan winter it is primarily office based technical report writing mixed with GIS tasks. During the summer it is a mixture of field and office work. Summer field work may involve potential helicopter, boat, ATV or vehicle travel for up to two weeks at a time away from home. Field work is completed in teams with a technical field lead for safety and on the job training.
The position is a full-time, 12-month non-seasonal position, with regularly scheduled office hours in Anchorage. Part time remote work may be considered.

The ideal candidate will have at minimum a bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline (biology, ecology, natural resources, soil science, or related natural resources field). Demonstrated experience with biological surveys in the region is preferred.
Must be comfortable with computers and hand-held GPS units. Technical writing skills are necessary for this position. Data analysis skills and GIS experience or training including feature editing and map creation is preferred.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Range

Responsibilities

- ArcGIS mapping and data analysis;
- Record, enter, organize, manage, and analyze data; and
- Assist with and prepare portions of written reports, including tables, spreadsheets, databases, and maps for client and regulatory agency review.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- An interest in ecosystems, plants, soils, water, and the Alaskan outdoors is essential.
- The ability to solve problems using critical thinking and to complete tasks with consideration to their own and the team's safety is important.
- A positive attitude and focus on safety in all working conditions is key.
- Experience identifying common Alaska plant species and/or experience describing soil horizons or the ability to learn these skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including strong note-taking skills and attention to detail.
- Experienced working in a team atmosphere and independently as required.
- Experience calculating with formulas in Microsoft Excel.
- Must have the willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work.
- Conscientious, organized, and disciplined.
- Good driving record and valid driver’s license required.
- Willingness to travel and conduct field work in remote areas for extended periods is expected for this position. Field work may include exposure to inclement weather.
- Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
