About the RoleStan Hywet Hall & Gardens is seeking a strategic and principled Finance Director to provide financial leadership for one of America’s most significant National Historic Landmarks. Reporting directly to the President & Executive Director, the Finance Director is responsible for the long-term financial sustainability, transparency, and operational excellence of the estate.
This is a critical leadership role that oversees all financial operations, ensures accurate reporting in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit standards, and serves as a key partner to the Board of Directors and senior leadership in sound financial decision-making.
What You’ll Do- Strategic Leadership: Advise the President & Executive Director and the Board on financial strategy, fiscal planning, and risk management.
- Financial Operations: Oversee all daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger management for both the Inc. and the Foundation.
- Reporting & Analysis: Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; present clear, actionable financial data to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
- Internal Controls: Maintain and strengthen internal control systems to safeguard assets, ensuring rigorous separation of duties and professional accountability.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead the annual budgeting process and provide long-term financial modeling to support organizational goals.
- Audit & Compliance: Coordinate the annual external audit and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, including Form 990.
- Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor the finance department staff, including the Senior Accountant and AP/AR Coordinators.
- A Principled Steward: You operate with the highest standards of ethical behavior and professional integrity, particularly regarding donor intent and confidentiality.
- An Expert Communicator: You have the rare ability to translate complex financial data into clear narratives for non-financial stakeholders.
- An Analytical Thinker: You possess strong sound judgment and the ability to identify opportunities for improved financial efficiency.
- A Collaborative Leader: You enjoy working across departments—from Horticulture to Visitor Experience—to support the broader mission of the estate.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required); CPA designation is highly preferred.
- Experience: 5–7 years of progressive accounting or financial management experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory/leadership role.
- Nonprofit Expertise: Proven experience in nonprofit accounting, grant reporting, and fund accounting is preferred.
- Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in financial systems, accounting software, and Microsoft Excel.
