Perform tests for diagnosis and medical research. Prepare and give small doses of radioactive drugs (radiopharmaceuticals) to patients, then use high-level imaging equipment to record images of the radioactive material in the body. Explain medical procedures to patients and answer any questions they may have. Follow safety procedures to protect the patients and themselves from unnecessary radiation exposure. Prepare and administer radioactive drugs to patients. Monitor and watch for any unusual reactions patients may have to drugs. Operate imaging equipment. Maintain detailed procedure records. Follow safety and disposal radiation procedures. An associate's or bachelor's degree in nuclear medicine technology. A state license and certification to practice nuclear medicine. The ability to competently operate imaging equipment. Good manual dexterity and mechanical abilities. Good communication skills and empathy when dealing with patients and their families. Strong critical thinking and analytical skills. The physical stamina necessary to stand for long periods of time and lift patients who need help moving.
