Job Summary: 

Serve as a member of the leadership team within the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management, collaborating and leading efforts to ensure the safety and security of the College community. Develop and promote opportunities to engage with the community and support positive community service and public relations. Represent the Office of Public Safety by serving on committees, collaborating to support events, providing security planning for essential college operations, and engaging with students. Manage special-event staffing needs and provide guidance on applicable safety and security requirements. Manage patrol operations by communicating, supporting, and executing the goals and objectives of patrol functions across all shifts. Interpret, enforce, and ensure compliance with college policies and procedures, departmental rules and regulations, and all applicable state, federal, and local laws and ordinances. Perform crime prevention, surveillance, and law enforcement duties. Collaborate in the preparation, posting, and distribution of the patrol duty schedule in coordination with the Lieutenants and Sergeants, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. 

Job Responsibilities:

1. Event Coordination

Serve as the coordinator for major event planning and execution. Work with the Crime Prevention and Community Events Liaison, the Assistant Director, and administrative staff to review event summaries from the Office of Conference and Event Services. Ensure appropriate safety and security planning; determine patrol staffing needs; prepare assignment details and written instructions. Collaborate with Environmental Health and Safety and Parking/Transportation to schedule student and professional staff. Track, record, and process chargebacks and billings for equipment and personnel assigned to special events.

2. Training Oversight

Identify training and recertification needs for Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management staff. Maintain training records and schedule training activities, outreach initiatives, and educational programs. Collaborate with partner agencies to coordinate multi-jurisdictional training across disciplines, fostering mutual aid and shared preparedness.

3. Educational Programming & Internship Support

Develop and support educational programming for the campus community, including student-focused prevention education, staff and faculty training, and academic programming upon request.
Screen student interest in internship opportunities and develop programming and materials that support student goals while aligning with the department’s mission and strategic priorities.
Review, advise on, and evaluate film shoot safety plans for approval or denial.

4. Body-Worn Camera Program

Oversee and maintain the Body-Worn Camera program and serve as system administrator, including camera maintenance, evidence management, hardware/software upkeep, and contract negotiations. Conduct research and evaluate emerging products for program improvement. 

5. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Demonstrate and promote multicultural awareness and contribute to an inclusive, respectful campus community. Model and communicate expectations for civil, inclusive behavior and promote a collaborative environment for staff, faculty, students, and visitors.

6. Emergency Response & Committee Participation

Participate on campus committees as assigned. Serve as a member of the College Emergency Response Team (CERT), manage operational issues, and act as incident commander during large-scale events such as weather emergencies, demonstrations, or other heightened law enforcement situations. Develop operational and emergency response plans for special events and support the College’s Emergency Response Plan.

7. Crime Prevention & Safety Initiatives

Provide leadership and support to the Assistant Director for Clery Act and Prevention Education and Office of Public Safety administrators to participate in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) assessments and recommend safety enhancements. Provide direction for crime prevention programming and support initiatives to enhance campus safety and increase officer engagement with the community.

8. Hiring, Evaluation & Personnel Management

Participate in search and selection processes for vacant positions within the Office of Public Safety and across campus as requested. Conduct interviews, prepare hiring recommendations, complete performance reviews, and make recommendations for merit increases, promotions, transfers, and disciplinary actions.

9. Patrol Operations Leadership

Maintain oversight of patrol shift activity through daily review of reports and incidents. Advise administration regarding conditions affecting public safety, law enforcement, or personnel conduct. Direct and support patrol operations, interpret regulations, maintain required records, and prepare reports. Ensure timely completion of assigned work in compliance with departmental policies and directives.  Contribute to special investigations and investigative tasks as needed. 

10. Communication & Process Improvement

Conduct regular meetings and briefings with staff to communicate policies and resolve issues. Implement process improvement initiatives related to patrol operations and department goals. Participate in policy and procedure development for the department.

11. Case Management & Law Enforcement Duties

Work collaboratively with Administrative and Road Patrol Lieutenants on case management, investigations, and evidence procedures. Prepare investigative reports; make arrests; coordinate search warrants; and provide testimony in court proceedings and campus disciplinary hearings.

12. Labor Relations

Address, investigate, and respond to labor union concerns and grievances. Assist in contract negotiations and labor-related matters.

Qualifications: 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive law enforcement experience, including at least three years of command-level management (Sergeant or above) with demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Ability to foster an inclusive and culturally aware environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to hold staff accountable for inclusive and respectful conduct.
  • Possession of, or eligibility to obtain, a New York State Pistol Permit.
  • Valid New York State Driver’s License (or ability to obtain) and compliance with College vehicle operation requirements.
  • Ability to perform all essential functions of the position.
  • Flexibility to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, special events, and additional shifts as required.
  • Successful completion of a criminal records and fingerprint background check.
  • Experience supervising employees in a unionized environment.
  • Completion of a New York State Basic Course for Police Officers or Peace Officers and Police Supervision course.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Certifications or experience in a collegiate or campus public safety environment.

Essential Position Designation

This position is designated as essential and is required to support critical operations during emergencies or disruptions such as inclement weather. During an official College closure, delay, or remote status declaration, the incumbent is expected to:

  • report to campus, or
  • remain at work
    for scheduled hours and additional time as necessary.

This position is 37.5 hours per week, 52 weeks per year.

Hiring Range:

$95,000-$100,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
