What are the responsibilities and job description for the AUTO AND EQUIPMENT MECHANIC position at Staff and Faculty?
Summary:
Perform maintenance, repair and servicing of power-driven equipment and vehicles and assist with the management of the rental fleet. Assist with grounds projects and snow removal operations. This position is considered to be essential during emergency situations and the incumbent is subject to periodically being requested to report to work.
Supervision:
This position will receive day-to-day direction and guidance from the Assistant Supervisor of Transportation & Grounds Equipment. This position has no direct supervisory responsibility.
Essential Duties:
1. Repair and maintain a variety of vehicles and equipment including automobiles, trucks, tractors, lawn mowers, backhoes, loaders, excavators, and trailers, including fabrication.
2. Repair and maintain diesel engines including servicing fuel line injectors.
3. Overhaul and repair hydraulic lines, valves, motors, pumps and cylinders; work with flow charts.
4. Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical issues, sensors, check engine lights, etc., utilizing various computer software programs and diagrams.
5. Perform routine preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment; lubricate, wash, fuel, change oil and tires, replace lights, belts, hoses, sharpen attachments, and perform other maintenance as necessary.
6. Perform NYS inspections on college owned vehicles and trailers.
7. Test-drive vehicles and equipment to diagnose problems or ensure corrective actions have been performed.
8. Order parts and maintain inventory of supplies needed to perform routine maintenance tasks.
9. Maintain record of vehicle and equipment repairs using work order system.
10. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of information on the repair of hydraulics, hydrostatic drives and diesel engines.
11. Assist with grounds projects and snow removal, when needed.
12. Manage the college vehicle rental fleet operations, including but not limited to reservations, agreements, and maintenance of the rental fleet.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED and a minimum of 3 years of experience in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy equipment and vehicles; knowledge of and experience overhauling and repairing hydraulic lines, valves, motors, pumps and cylinders, experience repairing diesel engines and servicing fuel line injectors; possession of or the ability to obtain a valid NYS Inspection License; possession of a valid driver’s license while adhering to the requirements set forth by the College’s Risk Management Office; ability to lift equipment weighing up to 60 pounds, experience operating power lifts, ability to climb a six foot ladder and successful completion of a background check.
Work Environment:
The work of the incumbent will be carried out within a generally accessible, safe, indoor and outdoor environment. The incumbent will be required to operate various power equipment and light and heavy ground maintenance equipment. The incumbent may be exposed to inclement weather conditions and will be exposed to dirt, grease, lubricants and fumes; therefore, the incumbent will be responsible for utilizing appropriate safety equipment such as eye and ear protection, as well as special clothing and footwear. Clothing, footwear, and tools will be provided.
This position is 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year.

Hiring Range:
$20.66 to $22.00 per hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
