Schedule: Saturday-Sunday, 7am-3pm

SUMMARY

The Shift Supervisor (SS) provides 24-hour awake coverage and is directly responsible for the day-to-day operations of the shelter, including providing general supervision and direction to staff, volunteers and guests. Provides immediate response to guest situations and facilitates the intake and discharge of all guests. This position is responsible for the welfare, safety and comfort, as well as daily support to the shelter guests. The SS works closely with guests, case managers, and other essential shelter staff to ensure that guests' needs are met with dignity and care, empowering them to transition toward stability and self- sufficiency.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Provides direction and oversight for day-to-day program operations, and management, coordination and scheduling of all daily services including laundry, showers, chores, and token distribution.
  • Oversees the scheduling and coordination of all supportive services, and ensures guest participation in supportive services, including but not limited to life skills, job readiness, and parenting classes.
  • Ensures children are supervised by their parents and encourages children and youth to participate in organized activities
  • Assists with the preparation of schedules to ensure coverage for all shifts and maintains the updated list of on-call staff. Receives and manages staff ‘call-outs’ and related coverage needs.
  • Ensures the safety and security of guests, volunteers, visitors and staff by communicating guest expectations and conducting internal and external perimeter checks during shift.
  • Provides direct supervision to Program Assistant staff, including conducting regular and as needed supervision meetings. Offers direction and guidance to Program Assistants regarding conflict resolution strategies and crisis intervention as needed during work shift.
  • Assists with new guest intakes, assigns rooms, conducts new guest orientation, and prepares the new guest folder for entry into the HMIS system; also facilitates move out process for ‘exiting’ guests.
  • Assists with enrollment of all school-aged children into school within 48 hours of admission and arranges for all needed school supplies, uniforms, and transportation.
  • Monitors nightly attendance, comparing roll call sheets with ‘excused absence’ log, and enters bed utilization data into the Baltimore County HMIS system. Follows up on reasons for ‘unexcused’ absences and makes recommendations to the Case Manager and Program Director regarding next steps for guests with unexcused absences.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES

  • Collaborates with the Case Manager in the management of mental health crisis and other guest ‘crisis’ situations with recommendations for immediate and follow-up action and keeps Case Manager informed of behavior concerns or issues observed during the shift.
  • Schedules and tracks attendance at all mandatory orientation and training sessions for shift monitors and Program Assistants under their supervision.
  • Enters attendance and participation data in the Baltimore County HMIS system for guest attendance at classes and for services delivered.
  • Promotes an atmosphere of care, respect, and support among guests, volunteers and staff according to the core values for St. Vincent de Paul.
  • In the absence of the Director or Assistant Director, makes decisions regarding operations and guest conduct.
  • Stays awake and alert during their duty hours.
  • Assists with and attends special events held by St. Vincent de Paul.
  • Attends, and as necessary represents St. Vincent de Paul in, external meetings and events.
  • Other duties as assigned, within the scope of the position.
Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school Diploma or GED required.
  • 2 years’ experience working with, and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of, persons who are materially poor and/or homeless, with a focus on women and children/families.
  • Experience in crisis intervention, behavior management, and/or conflict resolution.
  • Ability to be comfortable working with persons of all socioeconomic, religious, and ethnic backgrounds in a non-judgmental manner.
  • An understanding and respect for the confidentiality of guests.
  • Good organizational skills, including the ability to coordinate several projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to facilitate reflective and educational discussion with individuals and groups.
