General Summary of the Position 

 

The Art Teacher for grades 3 through 8 creates a dynamic, inclusive visual arts program for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The teacher develops students’ artistic skills, creativity, cultural awareness, critical thinking, and confidence through engaging instruction in a variety of artistic media, techniques, and art-history contexts.

The Art Teacher collaborates with faculty and administration to support the school’s academic mission and contributes to a positive, well-organized learning environment. In a Catholic school setting, the teacher also supports the mission, values, and spiritual formation of students.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position 

 

  •  Plan and deliver age-appropriate visual arts instruction for 3rd through 8th grade students.
  • Develop a sequential art curriculum that builds students’ knowledge and skills from foundational art concepts through more advanced techniques and creative expression.
  • Teach a range of media and processes, including drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics or clay, mixed media, digital art, and crafts as resources permit.
  • Introduce students to elements and principles of art, including line, shape, color, texture, form, value, space, balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, unity, and composition.
  • Incorporate art history, artists from diverse cultures and periods, and connections between art, faith, literature, history, science, and other academic areas.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet varied student learning needs, developmental levels, abilities, and interests.
  • Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, structured, and creative classroom environment.
  • Teach and reinforce responsible use, cleanup, storage, and care of art materials, tools, equipment, and classroom space.
  • Maintain inventory of art supplies and equipment; submit supply requests and manage the art budget in accordance with school procedures.
  • Assess student progress through projects, portfolios, observation, class participation, and other developmentally appropriate measures.
  • Maintain accurate student records, grades, and progress reports according to school expectations.
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with parents, guardians, students, faculty, and administrators regarding student progress and classroom expectations.
  • Prepare student artwork for displays, school events, art shows, performances, publications, contests, and community exhibits as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and other specialists on interdisciplinary projects, school-wide events, and student enrichment opportunities.
  • Participate actively in faculty meetings, professional development, school committees, supervision duties, and other assigned responsibilities.
  • Support school-wide expectations for student behavior, safety, attendance, confidentiality, and family communication.
  • Model professionalism, integrity, creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to student growth.
  • In a Catholic school environment, support the school’s mission and incorporate values such as respect, service, stewardship, and the dignity of each person into classroom culture and instruction.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or school administration.

 

Position Requirements 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • The Art Teacher works in a classroom or art studio environment with frequent student interaction. The role may involve exposure to common art materials, including paint, clay, adhesives, inks, and cleaning supplies. The teacher must maintain safe procedures for the storage, use, and disposal of all materials.

Education and Experience:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, Education, or a related field required.
  • Valid state teaching certification in Art Education or eligibility for certification preferred.
  • Experience teaching art to 3rd through 8th grade students preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child and adolescent development, visual arts standards, instructional planning, and classroom management.
  • Strong knowledge of a variety of art media, techniques, art-history content, and safe studio practices.
  • Ability to design engaging, inclusive lessons for students with diverse strengths and learning needs.
  • Effective verbal, written, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with instructional technology and digital tools used for communication, grading, and student learning.

Physical Requirements Specific to the Job: 

 

- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout classrooms and campus spaces for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry art materials, classroom supplies, and student projects, generally up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to safely demonstrate and supervise the use of age-appropriate art tools and materials.
- Ability to supervise students during class, transitions, exhibitions, and other school activities.
