Job Title: Custodian

Reports To: Director, Maintenance
FLSA Status: Full Time, 40 Hours/Week, Non-Exempt
Hours: Monday through Friday, 12 pm – 8:00 PM
Summary: Under the general supervision of the Director, Maintenance performs custodial duties including: sweeping, dusting, mopping, finishing and buffing floors, washing windows, sanitizing work areas, vacuuming and shampooing carpets, cleaning and restocking restrooms.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Confers with the Director, Maintenance; School Principal; and/or the Parish Manager regarding care and cleaning issues.
- Maintains a copy of the cleaning schedule and ensures that work is done in accordance with that schedule.
- Coordinates with the Director, Maintenance on the requisition of needed supplies, materials and equipment repairs.
- Makes minor, non-technical, repairs to buildings and equipment.
- Sweeps, cleans, scrubs, refinishes and polishes floors.
- Dusts and cleans furniture, woodwork and fixtures.
- Empties and cleans all recyclables and waste receptacles.
- Cleans whiteboards.
- Washes windows and walls.
- Performs emergency clean ups on issues resulting from breakage, vandalism, spilling or illness.
- Vacuums and shampoos carpets.
- Moves and arranges furniture and other materials.
- Sets up, takes down, and cleans up designated eating area for meals and other activities.
- Operates scrubbers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, and other related custodial equipment.
- Conducts safety inspections on playground equipment. Assists the Director, Maintenance in maintaining playground equipment and associated grounds.
- Locks and unlocks doors, gates, windows, storerooms as appropriate. Secures the facility in accordance with standard policy.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of:
- Current cleaning methods including the preferred methods for cleaning floors, carpets, walls and fixtures.
- Use and care of custodial materials and equipment.
- Requirements for maintaining school buildings and grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Ability to:
- Use simple mechanical tools in making minor non-technical repairs.
- Work independently with minor supervision/direction.
- Work at heights to inspect and replace lights.
- Maintain a high level or workmanship.
- Establish and maintain effective, respectful, and cooperative working relationships with school staff, fellow employees, supervisors and the public.
- Follow safe work practices.
- Be aware of surrounding work environment and adapt as needed.
- Work in a team environment.
- Take on new responsibilities and adapt to changing situations.
Experience:
- Two years of custodial experience is preferred.
Education:
- Completion of an approved custodial training course is preferred.
- Less than High school diploma.
Working Environment: While performing the duties of this job the employee works in an educational and religious facility. The employee’s primary responsibility is working with students and staff during the school day. This position may involve frequent interruptions and direct contact with staff, students and the public; most work would be without, or with minimal, supervision.
Physical and Mental Requirements: The physical and mental requirements listed below are examples of the physical demands of the position.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects weighting up to 50 pounds.
Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.
- Work involves the climbing of ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps and will involve walking and standing for extended periods of time.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which requires following basic safety precautions.
- Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

Pay: $14.00 - $16.00 per hour
