SUMMARY

The Religious Education Coordinator & Youth Minister is responsible for coordinating and administering parish religious education programs, including sacramental preparation for children (e.g., First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion). The coordinator is responsible for the direction of the Pre-K through Youth faith formation.  This role supports catechists and volunteers, ensures effective program delivery, and maintains program operations in alignment with diocesan standards. In parishes without a Parish Catechetical Leader, the Coordinator works directly with the Pastor to support the parish’s faith formation efforts. The coordinator is not authorized to teach catechist certification courses in theology.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinates and administers parish religious education programs, including sacramental preparation for children (First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion).
  • Recruits, trains, and supports catechists and volunteers, ensuring compliance with diocesan certification and Safe Environment requirements.
  • Implements curriculum and selects materials approved by the Diocese.
  • Coordinates class schedules, sacramental preparation timelines, and related program activities.
  • Maintains accurate program and sacramental records.
  • Assists in the preparation and monitoring of the program budget.
  • Evaluates program effectiveness and provides recommendations to the Pastor or Parish Catechetical Leader.
  • Ensures compliance with all diocesan policies related to faith formation programs.
  • Collaborates with parish staff to support overall formation efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

CATHOLIC FAITH

Practice of the Catholic faith is required. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. Their public behavior must not violate the faith, morals or laws of the Church or the policies of the diocese.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Catechetics, Religious Studies, Pastoral Ministry, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in parish ministry or related field. 
  • Must have or be in the process of obtaining diocesan catechetical certification.


OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. 
  • Ability to build effective relationships with catechists, families, and parish staff. 
  • Ability to read, analyze, and respond to written communication. 
  • Ability to present information clearly and effectively. 
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and cultures. 
  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts in budget support. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to analyze information.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed mostly in an office setting. Employee may be required to work more than 40 hours including occasional evenings and weekends; performs extensive computer work.  


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The ability to sit and stand for long periods of time. Must be able to reach, grasp, feel, and see up close and from afar. Must be able to use basic office computer hardware and peripherals, with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to communicate verbally and in written form. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (15 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
