Preschool Teacher: 3-Year-Old Class

Job Summary

St. Stephen Lutheran Preschool is seeking a warm, enthusiastic, and dedicated Preschool Teacher to join our team. We are looking for an educator who is passionate about early childhood education and committed to creating a nurturing, engaging, and inclusive classroom where children feel safe, valued, and excited to learn.

The ideal candidate enjoys working collaboratively with colleagues, values strong relationships with families, and understands the importance of supporting the whole child through play-based, developmentally appropriate learning experiences. This position works with children ages 2.5–5 years and serves as one of the teachers in our 3-year-old class.

The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In addition, this position requires working at least two afternoons each week (12:30–2:30 p.m.) in our Extended Day Program and at least two weeks of summer camp each year.

Responsibilities

• Plan and implement engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences that align with early childhood learning standards.
• Create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, independence, and exploration.
• Support children's social, emotional, cognitive, physical, language, and spiritual development through hands-on, play-based learning.
• Observe and assess children's progress to guide instruction and meet individual developmental needs.
• Build positive partnerships with families through regular communication and collaboration.
• Work closely with fellow teachers and staff to maintain a supportive, team-oriented school community.
• Maintain an organized classroom and ensure compliance with all health, safety, and religious exempt licensing requirements.
• Support children with diverse learning styles, abilities, and behavioral needs using positive guidance techniques.
• Participate in staff meetings, professional development opportunities, and school events throughout the year.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field preferred.
• Experience teaching preschool-aged children is preferred.
• Knowledge of Virginia's early childhood learning standards is a plus.
• Strong understanding of child development and developmentally appropriate practices.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with children, families, and colleagues.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a positive and supportive team.
• A genuine passion for early childhood education and fostering meaningful relationships with young children.
• CPR and First Aid certification is preferred but not required at the time of hire. Training will be provided before the start of the school year.
