Position Overview:

St. Peter School seeks a compassionate, faith-filled School Counselor who is committed to supporting the academic, social, emotional, and spiritual growth of every student. As a member of our Christ-centered community, the School Counselor works collaboratively with students, families, faculty, and administration to foster a safe, joyful, and nurturing learning environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

Student Support

  • Provide short-term individual and small-group counseling to students experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, or academic challenges.
  • Help students develop resilience, self-awareness, emotional regulation, problem-solving skills, and healthy peer relationships.
  • Encourage students to recognize their God-given dignity while fostering confidence, empathy, responsibility, and respect for others.
  • Maintain appropriate records while protecting student confidentiality in accordance with legal, ethical, and diocesan guidelines.

Collaboration with Families and Faculty

  • Partner with parents to support students and strengthen the home-school relationship.
  • Consult with teachers to develop strategies that promote student success and positive classroom experiences.
  • Participate in Student Support Team meetings and collaborate on intervention plans.
  • Coordinate with outside counselors, therapists, and community agencies, as appropriate and with parental consent.

School Community and Culture

  • Promote a positive school climate rooted in Catholic values.
  • Provide classroom guidance lessons and small-group instruction on topics such as friendship, emotional wellness, conflict resolution, resilience, and responsible decision-making.
  • Support school initiatives that foster virtue, character formation, leadership, and service.
  • Assist with programs that strengthen students' social-emotional development while reinforcing the Gospel message.

Crisis Response

  • Assist the administration in responding to student crises and emergency situations.
  • Provide support following traumatic events or significant student concerns.
  • Recommend referrals for long-term counseling or specialized services when appropriate.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain current certification/licensure and participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Adhere to diocesan policies, ethical standards, and school procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with the principal to support the mission and goals of St. Peter School.
  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, integrity, compassion, and respect in all interactions.

Qualifications

  • Degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
  • New Jersey School Counselor certification or appropriate New Jersey counseling/social work licensure preferred.
  • Experience working with elementary and/or middle school students is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, parents, administration, and outside professionals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professional ethics.
  • Supportive of the mission of Catholic education.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $20,000.00 - $25,000.00 per year
