Job Description:

Job Title: Firefighter II

Pay Grade: TBD FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY

The Firefighter performs routine and specialized duties associated with emergency response, public relation/education events, and to protect lives and property from fire, manmade, or natural disasters within in the St. Paul’s Fire District (and other areas as requested)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Candidates must be able to climb ladders and stairs and work at considerable heights; lift, carry, drag, pull and push very heavy weights; perform work in physically demanding and adverse conditions including heat, smoke, fire, high temperatures, humidity and cramped spaces (exposure to allergenic and potentially harmful substances and dust exist).
  • Ability to follow oral and written, directions, or recommended/approved policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs), or standard operating guidelines (SOG’s) approved by the Fire District Commission.
  • Participates at fire scenes including the laying of hose, ventilating buildings, raising ladders, interior firefighting, salvage, overhaul, administering first aid, the use of hydraulic and small hand tools, and rescuing persons at a fire or other emergency scenes.
  • Follows departments' chain of command and Incident Command policy and procedures.
  • Follows department safety policy and or the manufactures safe operating procedures.
  • Conducts daily inspection & assists in maintaining departments firefighting equipment, apparatus, SCBA, safety equipment, and buildings, in a clean, operational, and ready condition at all times documents and reports all identified issues, removes item from service and tags out of service.
  • Performs emergency medical care to ill or injured persons at emergency scenes. Participates in fire prevention and community service programs such as Fire Prevention Week assignments, and any special request for public education programs, performs smoke detector installation, and assist with pre fire planning assignments.
  • Assists neighboring communities as requested.
  • Participates in department training courses to learn firefighting theory and practice, first responder and CPR emergency medical care and the handling of hazardous materials.
  • Maintains all required certifications and maintains proficiency in the various skills required for this position.
  • Performs emergency driving role including the driving of an ambulance when needed must know various routes to various hospital emergency rooms.
  • Maintains records and databases for the assigned fire station, personnel, fire apparatus, and incident reports as required.
  • Assists in maintaining equipment and keeping the apparatus in proper working condition, cleaning of fire station and grounds to include mowing grass, trimming and the use of several small engine equipment to properly maintain a nice landscape, and proper inventory of apparatus equipment accountable for all inventory issued to self, apparatus, or station.
  • Pursues various educational courses to enhance individual performance and to prepare for promotional opportunities when available. Performs other duties as assigned and as deemed necessary by the Chief

MINIMUM REOUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • High School Diploma or a GED from Accredited institution and one (1) year of experience preferred; or equivalent combinations of education and experience
  • Out of state employees must obtain a valid South Carolina Driver's License as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV); Class E or CDL
  • The SC Fire Academy offers evaluation of previous certifications and training from other accredited state or training entities. It is the policy of the South Caroline Fire Academy to offer reciprocity or equivalency for occupational level certifications issued by proper agencies. The SCFA does not offer equivalency for individual courses except those listed due to these being prerequisites for certification
  • To apply for credit, complete the Application for Equivalency or Reciprocity. The Fire Chief or his designee must sign the application.
  • Current Emergency Medical Responder certification / CPR (or higher medical certification)
  • SCFA Incident Command course and or (NIMS equivalent certifications 700,800, 100, and 200)
  • Firefighter I (IFSAC or equivalent);
  • Flammable Liquids and Gas firefighting;
  • Emergency Vehicle Drivers Certification (Class E S.C Driver's License or Class B CDL)
  • Firefighter II is required
  • Hazard Materials Operation training (IFSAC or equivalent)
  • Wildland Firefighting for Structural Firefighters
  • Arson Detection for First Responders
  • Must successfully complete the annual firefighter medical physical.
  • Maintain required certifications and skills required for the position

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of South Carolina laws and regulations as well as Department SOPs related to fire emergency response operations, techniques and practices
  • Knowledge of salvage, overhaul, rescue, hazardous materials, explosives and first aid techniques
  • Knowledge of the geographic layout of the fire district and fire hydrant locations
  • Skill in being physically able to protect yourself and others
  • Skill in the use of operational practices and employee management to determine the most appropriate response to emergency situations
  • Skill in the use of operating a fire apparatus and various types of equipment in a safe and effective manner often under adverse weather and life-threatening conditions
  • Skill in the use of oral and written communication
  • The FF is held to a higher standard and accountable for proper maintenance, inspection, and accountable for tools and other equipment listed on the apparatus inspection and check off sheets and for items and equipment assigned to the station during the assigned duty shift.
  • Ability to understand and carry out orders/assignments during emergencies often under adverse, stressful, or life-threatening conditions
  • Ability to effectively operate and control fire pumps on apparatus

PHYSICAL REOUIREMENTS:

The work requires frequent and recurring assignments requiring a strenuous effort and endurance or quick reflexes to perform the work, such as lifting and carrying on a continuous basis weight in excess of 100 Lbs., for extended periods of time, or regular travel on foot over rough terrain or barriers Physical skills are required under life threatening conditions

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment requires a high degree of individual tolerance to combinations of extremely unpleasant elements, such as those listed above or mental stress from constant conflicting urgent time and attention demands of the utmost priority. The nature of the physical environment may be such that the employee's personal well-being and safety may be compromised as a Public Safety Responder.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $31,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
