What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Minister position at St. Paul Catholic Church?

The Youth Minister, Grade 6 through 12, is a part-time, professional member of the Faith Formation team. She/He is accountable to the Director of Faith Formation and works within a model that serves both St. Paul and St. Bruno families. The program is hosted and run through the St. Paul campus.

Description of responsibilities, duties, and activities:

A. The Youth Minister under the guidance and direction (which will be reviewed annually) of the Director of Faith Formation is responsible for the planning, organizing, guiding and coordinating all of the faith formation process for parish youth in Grades 6-12. She/He is also the coordinator of the sacramental preparation program for Confirmation for all parish youth in Grade 11. As a member of the Faith Formation Team, he/she collaborates with the Faith Formation Committee, Director of Faith Formation and the catechists' leaders in assessing the appropriate needs and goals for the parish Faith Formation Program for Grades 6-12.

B. The major roles and subsequent tasks of the Youth Minister are:

1. To direct and administer a comprehensive youth ministry program integrated into the life of the parishes for youth sixth grade through seniors in High School. The components of this youth ministry model are: catechesis, advocacy, community life, evangelization, justice, peace and service; leadership development; pastoral care/guidance; prayer and worship. The four ministry settings are youth programming, family ministry, involvement in Church life, collaboration with the civic community.

2. To coordinate the High School (9th & 10th) focusing on the following areas:
a. Research, plan and implement high school curriculum.
b. Recruit (new and existing), screen, train, enrich, support and recognize Catechist leaders.
c. Plan and participate in social and recreational activities.
d. Establish and participate in a strong community service program for youth.

3. To coordinate the Confirmation (11th Grade) Program focusing on the following areas:
a. Develop a solid Confirmation curriculum and organize Confirmation retreats.
b. Recruit and provide training for Confirmation team leaders.
c. Organize Prayer and Worship events including Confirmation Liturgy.
d. Plan and participate in social and recreational activities.
e. Establish and participate in a strong community service program for youth.

4. Strive to develop/coordinate a High School Seniors Program focusing on:
a. Building relationships with High School Seniors.
b. Provide spiritual component of program.
c. Plan service and social opportunities for High School Seniors.

5. To coordinate the Middle School (6th to 8th grade) focusing on the following areas:
a. Research, plan and implement high school curriculum.
b. Recruit (new and existing), screen, train, enrich, support and recognize Catechist leaders.
c. Plan and participate in social and recreational activities.
d. Establish and participate in a strong community service program for youth.

6. Annual Budget and Monthly tracking-under the direction of the Director of Faith Formation
a. Assists in preparing annual line item expense & income worksheets for budget.
b. Monitors monthly expenses and income/revenue for program in comparison to budgets.
c. Gets approval from Director of Faith Formation for expenditures within the approved annual budget.

7. In collaboration with Director of Faith Formation, prepares short and long term plans and develops program goals and strategies to respond to the above listed job description. Maintains ongoing evaluation of such plans and goals.

8. Oversees/Assures the supervision of all minors while on parish/school grounds and offsite for catechetical activities.
a. Manage behavior and work with parents as needed.
b. In collaboration with Safeguarding Coordinator, works on keeping volunteer lists and record keeping for Safeguarding annual reporting to ensure Arch Diocese compliance.

9. Responsible for all administrative duties for the youth programs such as:
a. Communication with families via email, mail, & phone calls
b. Works with supervisor and Administrative Services on registration processes.
c. Tracking of attendance and registration for programs.
c. Effective communication with minimal support staff with clear expectations of desired outcome.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
K. Knowledge

  • Microsoft Office Suite (word, excel, publisher), Google Suite
  • Data base management, report generation, CRM platform
  • Mail merges, graphic & design work-letters, posters, cards etc.
  • Practicing Catholic/understanding of parish life

S: Skills

  • Professional working attitude and collaborative approach
  • Strong verbal communications skills & proofreading
  • Adaptable and Intuitive-especially with technology

  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and organize
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Education and Experience

a. Bachelor's Degree in Theological Studies and a certificate in Youth Ministry.
b. 3-5 years of experience as a catechist and/or teaching experience preferred. Previous experience working with youth.
