About Youth and Education
Established in 1994, St. Nicks Alliance’s Youth and Education serves more than 6,000
North Brooklyn youth each year. Through a wide-range of programs, children and youth are
empowered to successfully advance through the stages of education and into young adulthood
with the core competencies to thrive. In partnership with schools, families and community, St.
Nicks Alliance’s holistic approach to transformation combines youth development, academic
enrichment, health and wellness, arts learning and post-secondary readiness. St. Nicks
Alliance’s School Success Model introduces transformational practices to our afterschool centers
with the goal of fostering long-term school success through literacy immersion, socioemotional
and behavioral supports.
About the Opportunity
The Arts Education Manager will be responsible for supporting theme-based arts
education across all afterschool centers as well as targeted school day courses. The Arts
Education Manager is responsible for hiring and training 40 teaching artists and external
partnerships with external arts organizations, as well as coordinating artist teaching schedules.
Through professional development workshops and coaching sessions, the Arts Education
Manager assists artists with the development and implementation of curriculum and lesson plans
that support a cycle of four annual Interdisciplinary Thematic Units; ensuring high quality arts
education and instruction. The Thematic Units combine literacy and STEM with arts learning in
visual, performing and digit arts. The position reports to the Division Director and upon
completion of restructuring the Arts Education Manager will report to the Deputy Directors. The
Arts Education manager will work closely with the Program Directors, artists, youth workers and
external partners to bring diverse arts experiences to children and youth.
The ideal candidate must be a strong, empathetic relationship builder and a proven self-starter
with an arts education background and great organizational and leadership skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Coaching & Staffing
- Hire, onboard, train and support a growing roster of 40 teaching artists in visual,
performing, digital, fashion and culinary arts
- Identify external arts partnerships with arts organizations to enhance our internal artist
roster
- Work with program directors to plan and schedule artists residencies and subcontractors,
most of which are year-round
- Identify, plan and schedule professional development opportunities (curriculum
development workshops, coaching, site visits, etc.) that support artists
- Provide coaching sessions as needed to teaching artists
- Develop an observation rubric/tool to conduct formal observations
- Provide at least two formal observation and feedback sessions of artist in collaboration
with Program Directors and/or the Education Manager
- Act in a professional manner demonstrating appropriate and professional language and
behavior
- Complete hiring paperwork including clearances and onboarding for all artists
Curriculum and Lesson Planning
- Guide and support artists in the planning, implementation and facilitation of age-
appropriate arts curriculum and lessons related to Interdisciplinary Thematic Units in K-
8.
- Develop creative and engaging arts curriculum in alignment with our Interdisciplinary
Thematic Unit that includes a culminating event, project or showcase
- Support Teaching Artist in lesson plan development and writing
- Reviewing teaching artists lesson plans and making recommendations for revisions
- Ensuring that teaching artists are submitting final lesson plans to Directors
- Plan Youth Arts Portfolio courses for middle and high school students, that support their
interest and application to arts-centered high schools or college
- Identify appropriate arts enrichment field trip opportunities
- Support the application of youth development principles to enhance curriculum, lessons,
program quality and the growth of young people
- Manage and support special projects & initiatives, as needed
Budgeting
- Identify, organize, source and purchase authentic art supplies, staying within budgets
- Work with Deputy Directors and Associate Directors to maximize arts education budgets
- Organize and complete subcontractors agreements
- Collect and submit subcontractors invoices, timesheets and payment vouchers in a timely
manner
Other
- Design graphics, flyers and promotional marketing materials, as needed
- Uphold all safety standards and procedures as identified by St. Nicks Alliance/School
- Actively participate and identify training and professional development to continuously
- Ability to facilitate lessons and activities on a virtual platform such as Zoom or Google
- Other responsibilities, as assigned or as appropriate
Must Have Core Competencies, Skills, Education and Knowledge
- Min. Bachelor’s degree in visual, performing or digital arts; understanding of diverse
art forms a plus
- Min. 3 years administrative experience, preferably working with teaching artists.
- Min. 3 years teaching experience, preferably working with children and teens in
afterschool settings.
- Compliance with School Age Child Care (SACC) requirements, including medical
clearances.
- A sound understanding of English; bilingual abilities a plus
- Ability to be collaborative, patient and empathetic with diverse personalities
- Excellent organizational, planning and creative problem-solving skills
- Enthusiastic Self-starter with numeracy skills who learns quickly
- A genuine enthusiasm for developing professional skills
