Girls Wrestling Assistant Coach
The Assistant Girls Wrestling Coach is responsible for supporting the Head Coach in the leadership, development, and administration of the wrestling program. The primary focus is to foster a safe, inclusive, and competitive environment that promotes student-athlete growth, sportsmanship, and technical mastery.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Instruction: Assist in teaching fundamental and advanced wrestling techniques (neutral, top, and bottom positions) tailored to various skill levels.
- Practice Management: Help design and execute daily practice plans, including drilling, live wrestling, and strength/conditioning circuits.
- Supervision: Ensure student-athlete safety in the wrestling room, during travel, and at competitions.
- Match-Day Support: Assist with mat-side coaching, scoring, and video analysis during dual meets and tournaments.
- Mentorship: Model high standards of character, academic emphasis, and "mat-room culture" specifically supporting the unique needs of female athletes in a combat sport.
- Logistics: Help with equipment inventory, weight management monitoring (per state association guidelines), and team communications.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: Previous competitive wrestling experience (High School or Collegiate). Prior coaching experience is preferred but not always required for assistant roles.
- Certification: Must possess (or be willing to obtain) state-required coaching certifications, including:
- Fundamentals of Coaching
- Firs Aid/CPR/AED Certification
- Concussion Awareness training
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) wrestling rules and weight certification processes.
Preferred Skills
- Strong communication skills with athletes, parents, and administration.
- Ability to demonstrate moves physically (active drilling).
- Experience navigating the specific growth and recruiting landscape of women’s wrestling.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Must be able to work in a high-heat environment (wrestling room).
- Ability to lift/move wrestling mats (approx. 50 lbs) and perform physical demonstrations.
- Requires evening and weekend commitments during the winter season
