Responsibilities:
- Coordinate daily workflow, staff scheduling, and workload distribution within the Anatomic Pathology
Section to ensure timely processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and reporting of all tissue
specimens. - Perform gross examination and sectioning of surgical and biopsy tissue specimens following
established protocols. - Operate and maintain tissue processors, embedding centers, microtomes, cryostats, and automated
staining platforms. - Perform routine H&E staining, special stains (PAS, Trichrome, GMS, AFB, Iron, etc.), and
immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures as requested. - Examine slides under the microscope to verify that tissue sections and stains meet laboratory quality
standards before pathologist review. - Evaluate specimen adequacy and tissue fixation quality. Report discrepancies or concerns to the
Clinical Laboratory Manager or Pathologist. - Conduct quality control assessments, preventive maintenance, routine equipment care, and
troubleshooting for all Anatomic Pathology instrumentation. - Process specimens for analysis according to established pre-analytic and analytic procedures,
following specifications related to specimen type and fixation requirements. - Maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, reagents, and instrumentation. Ensure inventory levels support uninterrupted section operations.
- Participate in laboratory accreditation preparation and compliance activities (CAP, NYSDOH, CLIA).
- Assist with onboarding and orientation of new Anatomic Pathology staff.
- Contribute to method validation and implementation of new histological testing procedures and
staining protocols. - Assist the Clinical Laboratory Manager with training, competency evaluation, and performance
feedback for section personnel. - Support educational activities related to histological techniques for students, residents, and other
trainees as directed. - Other duties as assigned.
- Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training & Experience • Associate degree or higher in Histotechnology or Clinical/Medical Laboratory Technology from a program
accredited by NAACLS (or CAHEA/CAAHEP predecessor) or an equivalent NYSED-registered program at the time of graduation. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Histotechnologist or Histotechnician in a clinical laboratory setting. Prior lead or supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of histology techniques: grossing, embedding, microtomy, cryosectioning, routine and special staining, and immunohistochemistry.
