JOB SUMMARY:
The Job Cost Accountant is responsible for tracking, analyzing, and reporting project-level financial performance across the corporation and its subsidiaries. This role ensures that all direct and indirect costs are properly recorded, allocated, and aligned with contract requirements, including government contracting regulations where applicable.
This position plays a critical role in providing visibility into contract profitability, supporting compliance with FAR and 8(a) requirements, and improving the accuracy and reliability of job costing data. The Job Cost Accountant will work closely with accounting, payroll, contracts, and operations teams to ensure costs are captured correctly and reported in a timely and meaningful way.
Because the organization is continuing to build and strengthen its accounting processes, this role requires a candidate who is detail-oriented, analytical, and comfortable working in an evolving environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Job Cost Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate job cost records across multiple contracts, projects, and subsidiaries. This includes reviewing and validating all cost inputs, including labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment, and overhead allocations.
The position manages and monitors job cost structures within the accounting system, ensuring that costs are properly coded to the correct project, contract, and cost objectives. This includes maintaining alignment between payroll, timekeeping systems, and the general ledger to ensure accurate labor distribution and cost allocation.
The Job Cost Accountant reviews employee timecards and labor distribution to ensure compliance with government contracting requirements and internal policies. This includes supporting audit-ready documentation and ensuring that labor costs are accurately applied to the appropriate contracts and cost pools.
The role supports the development and maintenance of indirect rate structures, including fringe, overhead, and G&A allocations. The Job Cost Accountant assists in calculating, monitoring, and analyzing these rates to ensure consistency, compliance, and financial accuracy.
The Job Cost Accountant performs detailed variance analysis comparing actual costs to budgets, estimates, and contract values. This includes identifying cost overruns, underutilization, or unusual trends, and communicating findings to accounting leadership and operational managers.
The position prepares and maintains job cost reports, including contract-level profitability, cost-to-complete estimates, and project performance metrics. These reports are used by management to make informed decisions regarding pricing, staffing, and contract execution.
The Job Cost Accountant supports compliance with applicable government contracting regulations, including FAR and DCAA requirements, by ensuring that cost accumulation, allocation, and documentation meet required standards.
The role assists with audit preparation, including gathering support for labor distribution, indirect cost allocations, and contract-related financial data. The Job Cost Accountant helps ensure that all job cost records are complete, accurate, and audit-ready.
The Job Cost Accountant works closely with project managers, contracts personnel, and subsidiary leadership to ensure that financial data aligns with operational activity. This includes helping non-financial staff understand job cost reporting and supporting better financial decision-making at the project level.
The position supports system improvements within Sage Intacct or other accounting systems, including enhancing job cost tracking, reporting structures, and data integrity. The role may also assist in developing standardized job cost procedures and documentation.
The Job Cost Accountant may assist with budgeting, forecasting, and proposal support by providing historical cost data and cost analysis to support pricing and contract development.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelor’s degree in accounting is required.
The candidate should have at least three to five years of accounting experience, with direct experience in job cost accounting, project accounting, or cost accounting.
A strong understanding of general accounting principles and financial reporting is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in government contracting, including knowledge of FAR, DCAA requirements, and cost principles.
Experience working in an Alaska Native Corporation or similar multi-entity environment.
Experience with job costing systems and ERP platforms, preferably Sage Intacct or similar systems.
Experience with labor distribution, timekeeping systems, and indirect cost allocations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
The ideal candidate must have strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to track and reconcile large volumes of financial data across multiple projects.
This role requires a solid understanding of job cost structures, including direct costs, indirect costs, and cost allocation methodologies.
The Job Cost Accountant must be able to identify discrepancies, investigate issues, and resolve problems in a timely and effective manner.
Strong communication skills are required, as the position works closely with both financial and non-financial personnel, including project managers and operational staff.
The candidate must be highly organized and able to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and priorities simultaneously.
Experience working with accounting systems and advanced Excel skills are important for success in this role.
