What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Rector for Pastoral Care position at St. Mary's Episcopal Church?
St. Mary’s Episcopal Church is looking for an Associate Rector for Pastoral Care. Alongside the Rector, Associate Rector for Worship and Formation, and Assistant Rector for Pastoral Care, the new Associate Rector will work closely with our pastoral care volunteers to empower and support the care of St. Mary’s parishioners. The new Associate Rector for Pastoral Care will be charged in continuing the work of creating and empowering new pastoral care structures and systems to better equip the clergy and lay members of St. Mary’s to walk with each other during times of hardship and joy. Like the other members of St. Mary’s clergy, this Associate Rector will join in the work of preaching, teaching, celebrating, etc.
St. Mary’s is a growing parish of about 1,600 parishioners located on River Road approximately 20 minutes from the center of Richmond, VA. Our liturgical style is characterized by a strong balance of a traditional approach based on the 1979 BCP with a comfortable and welcoming environment. The Associate Rector for Pastoral Care reports to the Rector and is in charge of organizing the pastoral care ministries of the parish. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Coordinate and meet regularly with pastoral care committee(s) and volunteers
- Train and equip lay ministers for pastoral ministry (Eucharistic Visitors, Hospital Visitors, Birthday and other card writing ministries, etc.)
- Coordinate and keep track of pastoral care needs of the parish
- Participate in the life, worship, and sacraments of the church by teaching, preaching, offering premarital counseling, weddings, officiating funerals/burials, celebrating services of Holy Communion, etc.
- Meets regularly with the parish’s other clergy regarding pastoral care updates and responsibilities
