Job Summary:
Assists in the performance of preventive and corrective maintenance on a variety of mechanical components in the wastewater collections system i.e.; vehicles, grounds, and other various equipment found in wastewater facilities. Assist the Collections department with the inspection and data gathering to help identify inflow and infiltration throughout the collection system. Position reports to the Wastewater Collections Superintendent or Maintenance Supervisor depending on assigned duties.

Work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., aggressive human behavior, extreme outdoor weather conditions, confined work space, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.

Examples of Duties
Essential Functions
- Assists in troubleshooting and performing preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment in the wastewater collections system.
- Assists in disassembling, rebuilding and reassemble motors, valves, pumps, grinder pump, etc. to rehabilitate equipment. Check out and evaluate operation of equipment after rebuild is complete.
- Assists in performing minor electrical work in conjunction with mechanical repairs (e.g., connects/disconnects wires, investigate/correct minor pump control problems).
- Assists in responding to sewer back up and Sanitary Sewer Overflow calls.
- Assists the Wastewater Collections Department with the variety of operational duties; such as televising of gravity sewer lines and manholes, jet-rodding and vacuuming of sewer lines, and various preventive and corrective maintenance.
- Responds to customer and emergency calls regarding sewage grinder pumps, sewer backups and Sanitary Sewer Overflow calls.
- Maintains and operates trucks and equipment used for sewer line maintenance and inspections.
- Perform standby duties on a rotational basis.

Typical Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (These are pre-employment KSA that apply only to Essential Job Functions.):
- Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission policies and procedures
- Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission to the public
- Knowledge of relevant maintenance and repair practices and procedures as they relate to mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems and equipment, diesel and gas operated equipment, and hydronic boiler systems
- Knowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for operating, repairing, removing and installing equipment/materials as well as for ensuring safety
- Ability to effectively communicate with other staff members and the public
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records
- Ability to wear appropriate PPE for confined space entry including respiratory gear
- Ability to obtain Maryland CDL Driver’s License within 1 year of hire.

- Eligible to obtain Maryland Class B CDL with Tanker and Air Brake Endorsements within 1 year
