MISSION STATEMENT:

St. Mary's Academy, sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary since 1859, is a Catholic high school for young women, providing a challenging college-preparatory education in a vibrant learning environment. GENERAL SUMMARY: We are seeking an innovative and collaborative First Robotics Coach to coach the only all-girls robotics team in the state of Oregon. As an all-girls high school team, the candidate will have the opportunity to inspire future women leaders in technology and engineering. This position oversees the FIRST robotics program at St. Mary’s Academy in partnership with the partner Coach and team mentors. While the actual “season” runs from early January through the end of April, the team does have preseason and postseason build sessions, typically meeting two times per week. During the build and competition season, the team meets 5 times per week. In addition to building a robot for FIRST FRC (First Robotics Competition) competitions, outreach to the community is an essential part of the robotics experience. While not required, the team does attend fall “pre-season” events in addition to two FRC regionals in the spring. The fall events are comprised of the previous year’s game robot, while the spring season is with a brand-new set of tasks and rules.

First Robotics Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned.)

Supervise scheduled team meetings and additional meetings that may be required during the busiest parts of the season

Plan travel arrangements for competition events

Coordinate occasional community outreach demonstrations

Order materials according to purchasing procedures

Work with Development Team to coordinate fundraising

Recruit and collaborate other team mentors

Maintain a safe and clean working environment, and keep the students focused on maintaining safety

Communicate pertinent information to students, parents, mentors, and sponsors

Assign students to specific sub-teams and tasks in order to develop the students’ skills and help the teams achieve their goals

Mentor student leaders as they make executive decisions

Willingness to engage and learn alongside the students

First Robotics Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise students to ensure that they are safe, productive, and engaged

Coordinate multiple small groups of students and mentors who are working on a widely varying set of tasks at the same time; try to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to be learn or be productive

Collaborate with and manage the volunteer professional mentors to best utilize their talents for developing the students and achieving team goals

Ensure that tools are used safely, technology is used appropriately, and the shop / lab is cleaned up by the end of each meeting

Additionally, the candidate should demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; familiarity with the goals of an independent college preparatory school for young women and the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse student and parent population with high expectations for teaching and learning.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in a STEM-related field is preferred.

Prior experience in coaching or mentoring robotics teams is highly desirable.

Strong knowledge of robotics, including design, programming, and troubleshooting.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with students and parents.

Commitment to promoting STEM education and fostering a positive learning environment.

Familiarity with FRC paperwork, managing permission slips, event waivers, and student registration through FRC

Availability to work after-school hours and weekends as required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time

Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 lbs.
